TRM varsity basketball defeats Excel in area tourney Tuesday

The T.R. Miller varsity Tiger basketball team extended their season by another game Tuesday in the first round of the class 3A area 1 basketball tournament at Clarke County as they defeated the Excel Panthers 56-37.
The win for the Tigers improved their overall record to 8-13 and advanced them to play in the semifinals of the tournament Friday against No. 1 seed Clarke County at 7 p.m. Grove Hill.
With a win Friday, T.R. Miller would play for the area championship Monday in Grove Hill and also would advance to the sub-region round of the playoffs either as the tournament champion or runner-up.
In the game Tuesday against Excel, T.R. Miller jumped out to a 16-9 lead in the first quarter to lead by seven. In the second quarter, both teams matched their points from the first quarter as the Tigers went into halftime with a 14-point lead, 32-18.
T.R. Miller would hold a 12-9 advantage in the third quarter to hold a 44-27 lead heading into the fourth quarter. In the fourth, the Tigers ended the game on a 12-10 run to get the win by 19.
Darrion Salter led the Tigers with 18 points and Kameron Winn finished with a double-double as he had 17 points and 10 rebounds.
Marc Edge added eight points in the win and Jaquan Dewberry finished with six. Caleb Dickey added five points and David Barragan chipped in two in the win.
T.R. Miller’s Lady Tigers will begin their play in their area tournament Thursday against Bayside Academy. The game will begin at 5:30 p.m. and will also be played in Grove Hill.
With a win Thursday, the Lady Tigers would play for the area championship Saturday against the winner of Clarke County and Washington County Thursday.
