Former teachers, and some students, of Southern Normal High School will gather on Friday, Feb. 24, 2012 to express appreciation for the teachers and for a band reunion.
Dr. Samuel Odom, a former student, and a current college professor, is helping to organize the event, a follow up to the big celebration of the 100th anniversary last year.
“Last year everything was planned really well with special programs,” Dr. Odom said. “This year we aren’t doing too much formal planning. We just want to get together and have a good time – maybe catch up on each other. It will give us a chance to recognize some of the former staff and faculty. We also will have a reunion for former band members. We want to have a good time, fellowship with each other and reestablish some old ties.”
The group will have a meet and greet time on Friday, 24, from 6 to 8 p.m. at East Brewton Civic Center. On Saturday, Feb. 25, there will be a parade from 1 to 3 p.m., which will follow the usual route beginning behind BankTrust, down State 41 to the downtown light. From there it will travel up St. Joseph Avenue and veer off on Sowell Road, going to MLK and turn ending up at Sportsman Park.
The group will meet again at 7 p.m. Saturday back at the East Brewton Civic Center for a dance until midnight. The 1980 to 1990 classes are sponsoring the event.
“We hope a lot of people come but no matter how many come, we are planning to have a good time either way,” Odom said.
