A group of Brewton area radio enthusiasts are planning an event to introduce interested individuals to the world of amateur radio Saturday.

The Brewton Amateur Radio Union will be holding what has become an annual event beginning at 8 a.m. Saturday at the Brewton City Park near the Escambia County Courthouse on Belleville Avenue.

The event is held each year to introduce the public to ham radio, according to information from Leon Bruton, an organizer of the event.

“Anyone who has ever had an interest in two-way radio communications is invited to attend,” Bruton said. “Local ‘hams’ will be present to answer questions about this worthwhile and very enjoyable hobby.”

Bruton said several working radio stations will be set up at the park with operators ready to make world wide contacts.

Bruton said the reasons for joining the world of amateur radio operations are currently at their peak.

“There has never been a better time to become an amateur radio operator,” Bruton said. “The price of equipment is very affordable. A modern VHF radio can now be purchased new for under $50. Morse code is no longer required for any amateur radio license and all licensing examinations are now done locally.”

Saturday’s event will continue throughout the day until 2 p.m. There is no charge for Saturday’s event.
