For parents, grandparents and those who care for children, an opportunity to learn a life-saving technique suited for infants and children will be available Tuesday in East Brewton.
Sav-A-Life, an organization dedicated to the sanctity of life, will present an infant and child CPR class at the First Baptist Church in East Brewton from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday.
Linda Smith, director for Sav-A-Life, said plenty of space is available for the free class.
“We appreciate First Baptist Church allowing us to use the facility,” Smith said. “We are excited to offer the class for the Brewton area.”
Smith said members of the Brewton Fire Department would be conducting the class for the public.
“Kevin Hoomes will be leading the class with other firefighters coming in to help,” Smith said. “The class will begin at 4 p.m. and students will receive their certification on the same day.”
Smith said the need for the special version of CPR was brought to mind while working with parents who utilize the services of Sav-A-Life.
“Initially, it was for our clients at Sav-A-Life,” Smith said. “During our parenting classes for moms and dads in the community we like to include CPR instruction. We decided it would be beneficial for grandparents and others who care for children to have that skill. This is a wonderful skill to have — particularly for young families.”
Smith said one grandmother has already registered for the class and is ready to learn the special technique of CPR for infants and children.
“We have one grandmother who is already certified in CPR and has saved two lives,” Smith said. “She is ready to take this class and is excited to have the opportunity to be certified in infant and child CPR.”
Smith said the Tuesday class could be the first of many such classes throughout the county.
“We have done this before,” Smith said. “But, we hope to have these classes a little more regularly for the public. We will e having classes in Atmore and Flomaton in the near future.”
Childcare will be provided during the Tuesday classes at no charge, Smith said.
Sav-A-Life offers a variety of services to mothers and fathers throughout the communities in their service area of Escambia County.
