WSN’s Banks recognized by ASWA for standout performance Friday against Hillcrest

Sipsey Valley’s Garrett Lewis rolled right and connected with Braylan Smith for a 96-yard touchdown pass early in the first quarter of Friday’s game against Curry.
Lewis was just getting started.
Lewis completed 10-of-16 passes for 340 yards and three touchdowns, added 11 carries for 203 yards rushing and scored the game-winning, 2-yard touchdown run with 2:40 to play to push the Bears to a 54-47 victory over Curry. Sipsey Valley trailed 47-39 in the fourth quarter before Lewis rallied the Bears to victory.
Lewis’ performance – accounting for more than 500 yards of total offense – made him this week’s Alabama Sports Writers Association Offensive Player of the Week. Lewis beat out two other finalists for the award, Falkville running back Marcus Woodall and Phillips-Bear Creek quarterback Rodney Camp.
Woodall rushed for 236 yards and two touchdowns on 10 carries, scoring on runs of 90 and 96 yards, in a 34-14 win at Sumiton Christian. Camp accumulated 482 yards of total offense (263 passing, 210 rushing) as Phillips beat Phil Campbell 58-44. He passed for three touchdowns and rushed for two more.
Piedmont’s Marquez Gamble is the ASWA Defense/Special Teams Player of the Week. Gamble registered 10 tackles, two sacks and recovered a fumble that led to the game’s only touchdown in top-ranked Piedmont’s 7-0 victory over No. 2 Leeds on Thursday.
The defensive/special teams finalists are Rogers’ kicker Jacob Duncan and Berry’s Clancy Brown.
Rogers kicked a 30-yard field goal with three seconds to play to send the game to overtime and his extra point on Rogers’ overtime possession proved to be the game winner as Rogers beat Lexington 28-27. It was Duncan’s first field goal of the season.
Brown recorded 28 tackles in a 50-42 win over Lamar County and scored the game-winning touchdown on a 10-yard run in overtime.
ASWA members from Anniston, Birmingham, Brewton, Centre, Cullman, Decatur, Dothan, Florence, Fort Payne, Gadsden, Gardendale, Huntsville, Jasper, Oneonta, Opelika, Mobile, Montgomery and Tuscaloosa submitted nominations this week.

OFFENSE
Wesley Bailey, J.O. Johnson: Completed 6-of-11 of passes for 150 yards, had touchdown runs of 3 and 6 yards, and picked off a pass in a 39-6 win against Lee.
Kaleb Beck, Dadeville: Completed 16-of-26 passes for 253 yards and five touchdowns in the Tigers’ 42-34 win over No. 10 Tallassee.
Marquese Banks, W.S. Neal: Rushed for 174 yards on 21 carries and had one touchdown in 38-17 victory over Hillcrest-Evergreen.
Rod Boykin, Edgewood: Caught four passes for 168 yards with touchdowns of 80 and 51 yards in a 62-14 win at Coosa Valley. The 80-yarder came on the game’s first play.
Geoffrey Bramblett, Locust Fork: Completed 13-of-24 passes for 206 yards with four touchdowns and an interception and rushed for 146 yards and two touchdowns in the Hornets’ 48-24 win over J.B. Pennington. His touchdown passes covered 10, 18, 45, and 29 yards and his scoring runs came from 12 and 1 yards.
Blake Byrd, Corner: Accounted for 388 yards total offense and four touchdowns in the 28-22 win over Hayden. Byrd rushed for 119 yards and two touchdowns on 29 carries and completed 14 of 21 passes for 269 yards and two touchdowns.
Terrance Byrd, Deshler: Rushed for 250 yards and two TDs on 30 carries in 49-35 victory over previously unbeaten Brooks.
Burt Chappell, Mary Montgomery: Scored four touchdowns to lead his team over Saraland. Chappell ran for 158 yards on 18 carries and scored on runs of 6, 20, 18 and 8 yards.
Cole Claunch, Colbert Heights: Threw for 304 yards and four touchdowns in a 34-32 loss to Hackleburg. Claunch was 27 of 38, including TD passes of 6, 7, 46 and 29 yards.
Zac Crocker, Cullman: Completed 29-of-39 passes for 277 yards and five touchdowns — two apiece to Mason Jones and Troy Forrest, as well as one to Houston Turner — in a 42-21 home victory over Class 3A No. 4 Madison Academy.
Roderick Davis, Demopolis: Ran for 199 yards on 27 carries in a 27-26 victory over Thomasville.
Aaron Dillard, Hubbertville: Ran 27 times for 264 yards, including a 51-yard TD run, in a 27-26 win over Shoals Christian. He also caught a 3-yard touchdown pass and kicked three extra points.
Cameron Echols-Luper, Auburn High: Completed 8-of-11 passes for 108 yards and two touchdowns and ran 15 times for 132 yards and a score in the Tigers’ 49-24 win over No. 7 Gadsden City. He also recovered a fumble and ran it 65 yards for another touchdown.
Deandre Fancher, B.C. Rain: Ran for 150 yards and a touchdown on 21 carries as B.C. Rain knocked off Theodore for its first win of the season.
D’Shawn Fife, Cedar Bluff: Rushed for 244 yards on 15 carries and scored on TD runs of 8 and 38 yards in the Tigers’ 62-0 victory at Woodville.
Johnathan Ford, New Hope: Logged 11 carries for 183 yards and TD runs of 48, 1, 65, 18 and 23 yards in a 48-19 win at Good Hope.
Seth Franks, Brookwood: Threw for 269 yards and two touchdowns and ran for a score in a 52-47 win over Oak Grove.
Mondarrius Griggs, Minor: Accumulated 271 all-purpose yards in the 21-10 loss to Hewitt-Trussville. Griggs ran for 187 yards, including a 63-yard scoring run, on 16 carries and returned two kickoffs and a punt for 84 yards.
Samuel Grisham, Lauderdale County: Rushed for 198 yards and 13 carries, including TDs of 3, 1, 47 and 49 yards in 45-8 rout of previously unbeaten Central-Florence.
Cody Henderson, Winston County: Had 210 yards of offense and three touchdowns in a 40-16 victory over Carbon Hill. Henderson rushed 10 times for 173 yards and two touchdowns and also caught four passes for 37 yards and a score.
Terrance Hollingsworth, Berry: Scored four touchdowns and had 133 rushing yards, 103 receiving yards and 140 return yards in a 50-42 overtime win over Lamar County.
Jordan Howard, Gardendale: Rushed for 198 yards and two touchdowns on 34 carries in the 31-30 victory over Briarwood Christian. Howard scored on runs of 1 and 2 yards.
Dylan Ingram, Edgewood: Was 12-of-16 passing for 375 yards and four touchdowns in a 62-14 win over Coosa Valley. He threw an 80-yard TD pass to Rod Boykin on the game’s first play from scrimmage.
John David Jennings, Gaylesville: Rushed 27 times for 340 yards and four touchdowns in 40-13 win over Coosa.
Jeremy Johnson, Carver-Montgomery: Was 20-of-29 passing for 338 yards and five touchdowns in a 51-14 win over Tri-Cities (Ga.). Also caught a pass for 40 yards and had 39 rushing yards.
Mason Jones, Cullman: Had 10 receptions by halftime and finished with 11 for 64 yards, including TD receptions of 6 and 12 yards in the No. 10 Bearcats’ victory over Madison Academy.
Tucker Jones, Demopolis: Passed for 226 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for 100 yards and a touchdown in a 27-26 win at Thomasville.
Ty Jones, Vinemont: Ran 29 times for 204 yards — the third time he’s eclipsed 200 rushing yards this season — and two touchdowns in a 21-0 home win against Class 5A Brewer.
Chance Key, Brilliant: Completed 9-of-12 passes for 191 yards and 3 TDs, rushed nine times for 194 yards and three more TDs, and totaled 385 yards of total offense in a 45-14 victory over Vina.
Courtlan Lewis, Ramsay: Ran for 79 yards on 21 carries and scored the game-winning two-point conversion in the 42-40 triple overtime win against Carver. It marked Ramsay’s first win since 1976 after restarting the program this season.
Patrick Lewis, Columbia: Threw three TD passes and added scoring runs of 1 yard and 14 yards as Columbia won its first game of the season, 32-27 against Butler.
Tevin Madison, Fayette County: Had receptions for 153 yards and touchdowns of 32, 27 and 41 yards in a 41-14 win over Sulligent; scored on an 83-yard kickoff return.
Herman McKenzie, Tallassee: Ran for 259 yards on 23 carries and three rushing touchdowns and completed 2-of-2 passes for 41 yards and another score in the Tigers’ 42-34 loss to No. 2 Dadeville.
Danarrius Miller, Hueytown: Ran for 219 yards and three touchdowns on 30 attempts in the 35-22 win over Pleasant Grove. Miller scored on runs of 29, 18 and 5 yards.
Levi Mintz, Cedar Bluff: Completed 6-of-7 passes for 172 yards and TD runs of 54 and 35 yards in the Tigers’ 62-0 win over Woodville.
Logan Motte, Mortimer Jordan: Pulled down nine catches – the Blue Devils’ total receptions in the game – for 150 yards and two scores in the 28-25 win over John Carroll. Motte scored on passes of 41 and 22 yards.
Nick Mullens, Spain Park: Completed 16 of 21 passes for 250 yards and TD passes of 25, 9, 66, 62 and 34 yard in a 42-16 win over Lee-Montgomery.
Jarred Owens, Curry: Accounted for 204 all-purpose yards and three total touchdowns in the Yellow Jackets’ 54-47 loss to Sipsey Valley. Owens rushed 13 times for 121 yards and two touchdowns, completed 2-of-3 passes for 44 yards and also added a 39-yard touchdown reception
George Payne. St. Luke’s: Ran for 329 yards on 30 carries and scored five touchdowns in a 42-19 win over St. Jude. His TD runs covered 1, 1, 3, 10 and 74 yards.
Joel Poe, Spanish Fort: Completed 21-of-29 passes for 296 yards and four touchdowns in the Toros’ 31-21 win over Fairhope.
Joel Pratt, Pickens Academy: Ran 11 times for 176 yards and two touchdowns on runs of 47 and 68 yards and also scored on a 70-yard interception return.
Trey Prestridge, Oak Grove: Ran for 170 yards and TD runs of 1, 59, 1 and 33 yards in the 52-47 loss to Brookwood. Prestridge added nine tackles on defense.
Daniel Robert, Briarwood Christian: Caught four passes for 131 yards, including scoring receptions of 55 and 38 yards, in the 31-30 loss to Gardendale.
Brad Robertson, Hokes Bluff: The senior quarterback scored four total touchdowns — including the game-winner in overtime — in a 27-24 victory over Glencoe. The senior quarterback passed for the game-tying TD with 22 seconds to go in regulation and ran in the winning TD on the first play of Hokes Bluff’s OT possession, earning Hokes Bluff’s first win of the year and snapping a four-game win streak in the series for Glencoe.
Tyler Rogers, Mobile Christian: Scored four TDs on seven touches in a 54-3 victory over Cottage Hill Christian. He scored on runs of 40 and 4 yards and caught TD passes of 46 and 78 yards. He ran for 75 yards on five carries.
Malik Rosier, Faith Academy: Accounted for five TDs in a 35-32 victory over Escambia County. He ran for 186 yards on 29 carries, including the game-winning 4-yard run, and completed 14-of-29 passes for 166 yards and TD passes of 13, 9 and 10 yards.
Traveon Samuel, Central-Phenix City: Ran for 163 yards and four touchdowns on just nine carries and caught nine passes for 109 yards in the Red Devils’ 33-31 victory over East Coweta (Ga.).
Devin Scott, Straughn: Rushed for 216 yards and two touchdowns on 23 carries in Straughn’s 29-26 win over Elba.
Kerry Smith, Corner: Grabbed nine passes for 209 yards and two touchdowns in the 28-22 win over Hayden. Smith scored on catches of 53 and 83 yards.
Diantae Thomas, Dothan: Combined for 311 yards rushing and passing with three touchdowns in a 28-14 win over Carroll. He rushed for 157 yards on 20 carries, including TD runs of 13 and 50 in the second half as Dothan rallied from 14-13 halftime deficit.
Terelle West, Clay-Chalkville: Carried the ball only six times, but scored three touchdowns and totaled 139 yards, scoring on runs of 7, 53 and 73 yards, in Class 6A second-ranked Clay’s 31-28 overtime victory over Pinson Valley.
DEFENSE/SPECIAL TEAMS
Sam Adams, Calera: Accounted for three touchdowns in the 49-0 win over Shelby County. Adams scored on a 96-yard fumble recovery, a 16-yard run and a 40-yard interception. He added another interception as well as five tackles.
Blake Bean, Oneonta: Recorded 11 tackles, four for loss, including a pair of sacks, in the Redskins’ 42-0 win over Susan Moore.
Jesse Blackburn, Gardendale: Recorded two interceptions and six tackles on defense, and added nine catches for 130 yards, including a 5-yard touchdown reception, in the 31-30 win over Briarwood Christian.
Tae Hayes, Decatur: Returned a kickoff 82 yards for a touchdown and recorded seven tackles (six solo) in a 21-14 upset of Class 5A No. 1 Hartselle.
Bailey Hansen, Edgewood: Had nine tackles, including four sacks, and forced a fumble in a 62-14 win at Coosa Valley.
Garret Headley, Lowndes Academy: Threw a 6-yard touchdown pass on a fake field goal with 6 seconds remaining in a 27-21 victory over Southern Academy. He added eight tackles, recovered two fumbles, and ran for 72 yards rushing with TD runs of 9 and 10 yards.
DeAnthony Holcombe, Washington County: Returned a kickoff 83 yards for at TD, returned an interception 25 yards for a TD, and added a 10-yard TD run in a 51-16 victory over Fruitdale.
Brandon Holland, Boaz: Recorded 17 tackles and two tackles for loss in a 12-7 win over archrival Albertville that kept Boaz unbeaten at 5-0.
Exavyer Jackson, Piedmont: Posted 10 tackles, including four for lost yardage, with three sacks and caused a fumble in the top-ranked Bulldogs’ 7-0 win over No. 2 Leeds on Thursday.
Nicolas Jackson, Wenonah: Posted 12 tackles, including five sacks and three tackles for loss – totaling 35 yards — in the 20-6 victory over Huffman.
Parker W. Jones, Houston Academy: Recorded nine tackles, including three for losses, and also recovered a fumble that led a short touchdown drive in the Raiders’ 30-14 win over Dale County.
Jamine Jordan, Calhoun: Went 100 yards with an interception for the second straight week in a 44-22 win over Georgiana. Also had TD runs of 50 and 28 yards and threw a 5-yard scoring pass.
Gable Lawson, Gaylesville: Posted 12 tackles, including two for lost yardage, with a sack and a fumble recovery in Gaylesville’s 40-13 victory over Coosa Christian.
Dylan Mitchell, Gaylesville: Tallied six tackles, recovered a fumble, blocked a punt and returned it for a 40-yard touchdown in the Trojans’ 40-13 win over Coosa Christian.
Josh Montgomery, Oxford: Finished with 10 tackles, an interception and a 88-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown.
Jesse Seals, Addison: Snared two interceptions in the second half to keep the Bulldogs’ 18-0 shutout intact on the road versus Appalachian.
Chase Short, Straughn: Hit a 20-yard field goal with 2:30 left for the winning points in Straughn’s 29-26 win over Elba. As a quarterback, he also rushed for 91 yards and a touchdown and completed two passes for 41 yards, one for a touchdowns.
Joecephius Smith, Minor: Tallied 10 tackles and a sack in the 21-10 loss to Hewitt-Trussville.
Hunter Whatley, Houston Academy: Returned kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown, had a 1-yard touchdown run and a fumble recovery and two tackles in the Raiders’ 30-14 win over Dale County.
Brandon White, Ashford Academy: Blocked two extra points and a punt and also had four solo tackles and an assist in the Falcons’ 35-33 win Lakeside.
Deantay White, Akron: Scored on a 90-yard kickoff return and rushed for 100 yards and a touchdowns in a 52-12 win over Marengo.
Kyle White, Macon-East: Returned the opening kickoff 87 yards for a touchdown in a 28-20 win at Bessemer Academy. Also had a sack, a fumble recovery and 19 carries for 150 yards and two touchdowns.
Jake Williams, Ashford Academy: Williams finished with 20 tackles, 12 solos and eight assists, and intercepted a pass at the 5-yard line late in the game to preserve a 35-33 victory over Lakeside.
William Winters, Holy Spirit: Had 10 tackles in a 39-0 win over Southeastern.
Omari Williams, Parker: Posted five tackles and two interceptions in the 34-14 win over Jackson-Olin.
Corey Yocum, Hackleburg: Blocked a 29-yard field goal with 12 seconds to play to preserve Hackleburg’s 34-32 win over Colbert Heights.
