BMS and WSNMS basketball teams split Thursday in Brewton

In the home opener Thursday for the Brewton Middle School basketball teams and the season opener for the W.S. Neal Middle School teams, the BMS girls claimed a win over the Lady Eagles while the WSNMS boys defeated the Tigers of Brewton.
In girls action, BMS won 22-11 to improve to 2-0 this season while W.S. Neal fell to 0-1. In boys action, WSNMS won 33-20 to start their year off 1-0 while Brewton remained winless and fell to 0-2.
The two teams will meet again Tuesday in East Brewton. Game time is set for 4 p.m. with the girls playing first followed by the boys.
BMS Lady Tigers 22, WSNMS Lady Eagles 11
A 10-0 run for Brewton to start the game; an 11-0 run for W.S. Neal over the second and third quarters; and a 12-0 run for Brewton to end the game: that is what the girls game consisted of Thursday afternoon as the Brewton Middle School Lady Eagles doubled up W.S. Neal 22-11.
Brewton started the game on a 10-0 run to lead W.S. Neal 10-2 after the first quarter. From there, W.S. Neal would use an 11-0 run over the second and third quarters to take an 11-10 lead over Brewton heading into the fourth quarter after trailing 10-8 at the half.
In the fourth quarter, Brewton ended W.S. Neal’s run and their 13:10 scoring drought with a 12-0 run to end the game as they defeated W.S. Neal 22-11.
W.S. Neal outscored Brewton 6-0 in the second quarter and 3-0 in the third quarter.
Akilah Brazile led Brewton with eight points followed by four each from Steely Ruzic, Karmaiya Jenkins and Brianna Dees while Destiny Watson had two points.
For W.S. Neal, Kametria Lawson led with five points, Marisha Fraser added four points and Ri’Ante Askew had two points.
The Lady Tigers were 0-for-5 from the free throw line while W.S. Neal was 3-for-9.
WSNMS boys 33, BMS boys 20
Trailing 16-15 at the half, the Brewton Middle School boys were outscored by W.S. Neal 17-5 in the second half to defeat Brewton 33-20 Thursday.
W.S. Neal led Brewton 5-4 after the first quarter and 16-15 at the half after both teams scored 11 points each in the second quarter.
In the third quarter, Brewton cut the lead to 20-17 with 2:11 left to play, but from there, W.S. Neal went on a 13-0 run to take a 33-17 lead with 2:30 left in the game. Joshua Jolly hit a late 3-pointer for Brewton with 2:05 left in the game to cut the lead to 33-20, but neither team would score the remainder of the game as W.S. Neal won by 13.
W.S. Neal outscored Brewton 7-2 in the third quarter and 10-3 in the fourth to seal the win.
Marcus Paul led Brewton with seven points while Hayden Atkinson had five points. JoJo Booker and Jolly had three points each while Stokes Jennings had two points.
Keith Barksdale and Jacolby Hawthorne led with eight points each while Kenny Walker and J.T. Lane had six points each. Hayden Winchester had three points while Brandon Conway had two points in the win.
The Tigers were 4-for-9 from the free throw line in the loss while W.S. Neal was 6-for-16.
