Warhawk baseball drops opener to PSC

The season and home opener for the Jefferson Davis Community College Warhawk baseball team did not get off to a good start Tuesday as the Warhawks let a late lead slip away and they took a 4-3 loss to Pensacola State College.
On a damp and windy Tuesday afternoon at Warhawk Field, the Warhawks and Pirates were both held scoreless after one inning of play, the JDCC built a 2-0 lead after the third inning after plating one run each in the second and third innings.
PSC got on the board with their first run in the top of the fourth to cut the lead to 2-1, but the Warhawks responded with their third run of the day to take a 3-1 lead heading into the fifth.
The third Warhawk run of the day would prove to be their final run of the evening, but the Warhawks couldn’t come up with runs at the most needed times Tuesday as the Pirates scored three unanswered to get the win by one.
PSC cut the lead to 3-2 in the sixth inning and tied the game at 3-all in the top of the seventh on a solo homerun.
In the top of the ninth, PSC started the inning of with a single, but was able to get the winning run to third on an errant pickoff throw by the Warhawks.
With the winning run on third, PSC got a sacrifice fly with one out to get the winning run and held JDCC scoreless in the bottom half of the inning to seal the win.
Warhawk starting pitcher Tyler Howell went four innings, giving up one earned run, on three hits and striking out four while walking one while taking the no decision.
Michael Yarborough went the next three innings and allowed four hits, two earned runs, walked none and struck out four.
Tyler Henry went the next inning and was credited with the loss. Henry went one inning and allowed two hits, one run, none earned and walked and struck out none.
Tyler Murphy relieved Henry in the top of the ninth and went the final inning and struck out one.
Brandon Ray went 2-for-2 and Hunter Myrick was 1-for-4 along with Logan Hill and Paul Schrier. Alex Jones was 1-for-3. Hill had one RBI in the loss and Mark Humphreys had one RBI as well along with Schrier.
JDCC’s first run of the game came on a bases loaded walk and the second run came from an RBI single from Schrier. The Warhawks’ final run came off a sacrifice fly from Hill in the fourth inning.
The Warhawks (0-1) will look to pick up their first win of the season as they are scheduled to be back in action Friday at home against Lawson State Community College. Game time is set for noon and will be a doubleheader.
The Warhawks will be back in action following Friday’s game Tuesday at home against Marion Military Institute. Game time is set for noon and will be a nine inning game.
