In a doubleheader Friday night, the T.R. Miller varsity softball team defeated McKenzie and lost to Daphne to fall to 8-5 this season.
The Lady Tigers rallied from a 5-0 deficit in the first inning to take down McKenzie 7-6 in game one. In game two, T.R. Miller lost to Daphne 10-1. No stats were available as of press time from the loss to Daphne.
“We played a very tough McKenzie team,” Lady Tiger head coach Greg White said. “They are a smaller school but they hit as well as any team we have played all season. We got down 5-0 very quickly, but we didn’t lose our composure and we just kept battling back and finally tied it up and forced extra innings. Jessica Allan laid down a great bunt to score Madison Douglas and we were able to get the come from behind win. Daphne had a very solid team top to bottom—pitching, hitting, defense—they had it all. Playing a team like that will hopefully prepare us for tougher games as the season progresses.”
Against McKenzie, the Lady Tigers outscored McKenzie 7-1 after spotting McKenzie five runs in the first inning. Moriah Brundidge earned the win in relief of starter Laurel Billy. Billy went the first four innings and allowed 10 hits, six runs, walked six and struck out three. Brundidge went the final three innings and allowed no runs or hits, walked one and struck out four.
At the plate, Leslie Holmes had a double and Kelsey Thompson had a single. Krystal Bell and Brundidge had two singles each while Jessica Allan had the game-winning single.

TRM JV goes 2-1 in own tourney to take third:
The T.R. Miller JV team went 2-1 Saturday in their own tournament to improve to 9-2 this year and take third place.
The JV team beat J.U. Blacksher 9-0 in game one and beat Houston Academy 6-2 in the second round of pool play. In the elimination part of the tourney, T.R. Miller then lost to HA 3-0 in semifinal round to take third. No stats or game information was known from the Houston Academy game.
“I was pleased with the tournament overall,” White said. “As a team, we got a lot of quality at bats against some quality pitching. Our pitcher got a lot of much needed pitching time as well. We were able to play three games in one day, which usually takes about a week and a half to get three JV games in during the season. So we were glad of that as well. This team works very hard and they will probably do some really good things before they leave T.R. Miller High School.”
Against J.U. Blacksher, T.R. Miller scored eight runs in the third inning to propel them in the win.
Taylor Austin earned the win on the mound going four innings and pitching a no-hitter. Austin walked two and struck out six.
At the plate, Madison Douglas had a single and Steely Ruzic had a single, a double and three RBIs.
Bell had a single and Austin had two singles. Myra Reiss added a double and Holmes had two singles and one RBI. Anna Kate Brittain finished with two singles and one RBI in the win and Molly Jackson had one single.
