Brewton 14s go 0-2 in tourney
In the 14-year-old Brewton Babe Ruth tournament at T.R. Miller High School in Brewton, the Brewton all-stars went winless.
Brewton opened tournament play Friday with a 4-2 loss to Atmore to fall into the loser’s bracket. From there, Saturday’s game as rained out and Brewton lost to Atmore 6-5 on Sunday to be eliminated from tournament.
In the championship game Monday night, Monroe lost to Atmore 6-5 to force a second game. In game two, Monroe defeated Atmore 8-3 to clinch the championship.
Monroe went 2-1 overall in the tournament while Atmore went 3-2. Brewton finished 0-2.
Friday: Atmore 4, Brewton 2
Trailing Brewton 2-1 after the second inning Friday, the Atmore 14-year-old Babe Ruth all-stars scored two runs in the fourth and one in the fifth inning to double up Brewton 4-2 in the tournament opener.
Nytorius Cooler, after a shaky start that saw him hit the first two Brewton batters of the game, kept Brewton off-balanced to earn the win on the mound for Atmore.
Cooler went the complete game seven innings and allowed four hits, two runs, walked five, struck out four and hit two batters in the win.
At the plate for Atmore, Ryan Johnson, Cooler, Devon Robinson, Kainoa Gumapac and Marlon Lee all had singles. Gumapac had one RBI and Lee had two RBIs. Eric Williams led Atmore with a triple and a single.
For Brewton, Lane Clark took the loss on the mound going five innings and allowing seven hits, four runs, walked two and struck out seven. Hunter Brittain went the final two innings and struck out three.
At the plate, Jordan Williams, O’Neil White and Preston Townsend all had a single each.
Brittain had a double and one RBI while Jo Jo Booker had one RBI.
Sunday: Atmore 6,
With two outs in the bottom of the seventh and the game tied at 5-all, Rashaan Flavors hit a triple and scored on a wild pitch to give Atmore a 6-5 win over Brewton Sunday to advance to the championship game and eliminate Brewton.
It was the second win over Brewton in the tournament after Friday’s opening win and Saturday’s rainout.
After a scoreless first inning for both teams, both scored two runs each in the second inning.
After Brewton took a 3-2 lead in the third, Atmore plated three runs in their bottom half of the inning to take a 5-3 lead.
Neither team would score again until Brewton plated one run each in the sixth and seventh innings to tie the game at 5-all.
From there, Flavors’ tripled and scored the game-winning run on a passed ball for Atmore to seal the win.
For Atmore at the plate, Flavors, Cooler, Robinson and Brandon Cummings had the four hits in the win. Robinson had a double and Flavors had a triple.
Cooler and Johnson had one RBI each while Cumming had two.
Gumapac and Cooler teamed up for the win on the mound as they combined to go seven innings and allow eight hits, five runs, two earned, walked and struck out four.
For Brewton, Hunter Brittain pitched against Atmore and surrendered just two hits and allowed one earned run, walked five and struck out five during his 4 2/3 innings of work.
Caleb Winton went the first two innings and allowed two hits, five runs, two earned, walked five and struck out one.
At the plate, Booker and TyShawn Davis had one hit each while Brittain, Clark and White had two hits. Booker, Clark, Joshua Winton and Troy Lewis had one RBI each.
