Softball all-stars compete at state tournament

Local softball teams from the area travelled to Andalusia this past weekend to play in their state tournament games.
Here is a recap of their tournament games:
8U: Andalusia 17,
Brewton 7
Olivia Mikel went 2-for-4; Maggie Furr went 2-for-2; C. Pettie went 2-for-3; K. Murphy went 1-for-3; and M. Davis and M. Mitchell had to runs each to lead Andalusia.
Brewton’s Peyton Myrick went 2-for-3.
Andalusia 14, Brewton 6
Furr, Pettie and Murphy went 2-for-4 each to lead Andalusia. M. Davis went 1-for-2 with a double. Mikel went 1-for-4 with a double.
Brewton’s Kinsley Byrd went 1-for-4 with a double; and Myrick went 1-for-4 with a single.
10U: East Brewton 14,
Tri County 13
The game was neck and neck the first two innings, but East Brewton started to chip away in the third with six runs to take a 10-8 lead.
East Brewton added four runs in the fifth, and despite Tri County scoring five runs in the sixth, still got the win.
Asia Davis went 2-for-4 with a double to lead East Brewton.
12U: Covington County 16, Flomaton/East Brewton 1
Covington County’s Morgan Bledsoe and Allie Hawkins went 2-for-3 each to lead the host team. Tori Hall went 2-for-2; Amy Bulger went 1-for-1; and Madison Harrison went 1-for-2.
CC scored five runs in the first inning, one run each in the second and third, and nine in the fourth. Flomaton/East Brewton scored one run in the second. Magan Engle and Lucie Tharpe both had hits in the loss while Tharpe had one RBI.
Engle pitched in the loss and allowed 16 runs, eight hits, struck out one, and walked seven.
Brewton 10U falls to Wedowee:
The Brewton 10U girls softball game lost to Wedowee 12-2 Saturday in their state tournament game in Andalusia. The game ended in the fourth inning due to the 10-run rule.
Chloe Smith and Courtland Salter both pitched for Brewton. Smith pitched the first three innings and allowed eight runs for Brewton while recording three strikeouts. Salter pitched the fourth inning and gave up four runs.
Offensively for Brewton Makenzie Thomas had a single, Sailor Smith had a single, Sara Scott had a triple, Kate Najor had a single, and Macie Happolt had a single. Scott and Madison Hawthorne scored Brewton’s two runs.
Friday’s games:
Crumpled tents lay strewn across the Dwight Mikel Sports Complex like dead spiders Friday after a storm blew through the area with high winds, rain and lightning.
The inclement weather stopped play of the Babe Ruth State Softball Tournament for more than three hours, where play resumed at around 5:30 p.m. for the first afternoon games in pool play.
City of Andalusia employees were busy with their squeegees trying to dry the fields as fast as they could to get action going back again.
Before the bottom fell out of the sky, Brewton’s softball teams picked up two wins in pool play at the tournament, where they beat Covington County 12-9 in 8U action, and Alexander City 17-15 in 10U action.
In 12U action right before the weather implemented play, Tri County defeated Flomaton/East Brewton 13-5.
8U: Brewton 12,
Covington County 9
Ashlee Findley went 3-for-4 with three singles to lead Covington County, but Brewton scored eight runs in the fourth and fifth innings to come out on top.
Brewton scored one run in the first inning, two runs in the second, one run in the third and four runs each in the fourth and fifth.
Covington County made things interesting with six runs in the fourth inning to take a 9-8 lead.
Covington County’s Hailey Ward went 2-for-3 and Elizabeth Cross went 2-for-4 with two singles.
Brewton’s Jennings Ruzic went 1-for-3; Caroline Williamson went 1-for-4; Kinsley Byrd went 1-for-4; Peyton Myrick went 1-for-4; and Grayton Coale went 3-for-4 with three singles.
10U: Brewton 17,
Alexander City 15
Trailing 14-3, Brewton scored 12 runs in the fourth inning and tacked on one run each in the fifth and sixth for the win.
Alexander City shot out to a 10-1 lead after the second inning, but fell flat the fourth through the sixth, scoring only three additional runs.
Sailor Smith had a hit for Brewton, Kate Najor had a hit and Sara Scott had four hits. Talya Smith had a hit and Rebecca Moore also had a hit for Brewton. Scott had three RBIs for Brewton.
Mackenzie Thomas pitched six innings in the win for Brewton and had 10 strikeouts.
12U: Tri County 13,
Flomaton/East Brewton 5
Tri County scored three runs in the first inning, and added five later in the third to pull away with a 8-3 lead to get a 13-5 win over Flomaton/East Brewton. Tri County plated two in the fourth and three in the fifth while holding FEB to two final runs in the fifth inning.
Jena Wyatt had one RBI for Flomaton/East Brewton while Rebecca Diamond, Caitlin Hartsel, Heather Redash, Brianna Pugh and Kaitlynn Wilson all had hits.
Pugh, Diamond and Magan Engle all pitched in the loss.
After rain delay games:
Brewton scored six runs in the fourth inning in a 13-3 rout over Opp on Friday in 8U Babe Ruth State Softball action.
The Lady Tigers scored one run in the first inning to get things going. They added three runs in the third and after their six runs in the fourth, led 10-1.
Opp added two runs in the fifth inning and Brewton scored three runs in the other half to close out with the mercy rule win.
Jennings Ruzic and Grayton Coale went 3-for-4 each to lead Brewton. Kinsley Byrd went 2-for-4.
In 12U action, Andalusia beat Brewton, 13-3.
No other stats, scores or game information from any other local softball teams were known as of press time.
