In their opening game loss to Monroe Saturday, it was the lack of hitting that plagued the Brewton Babe Ruth 13-year-olds in Evergreen as they took an 18-7 loss. In their second game against Monroe Monday—a win—Brewton’s bats came to life as they defeated Monroe 14-4 in five innings to force a deciding game for the district championship Tuesday in Evergreen.
In the game that mattered most, Brewton bats once again came to life as they had seven hits and Brewton pitcher Brandon Moye did his job on the mound and limited Monroe to only three hits.
But it is not the number of hits that matter, but on the runs, as Monroe held a 3-1 advantage in that category to hand Brewton a two-run loss and claim the district championship. Brewton finished as the runner-up team with a 3-2 record. Brewton declined the option to go the state tournament.
In the game Tuesday, Monroe struck early against Brewton as they scored two runs on two hits in the first inning to take an early lead. Brewton would cut Monroe’s lead to 2-1 in the top of the third inning. Monroe would manage only more hit the rest of the game after the first inning but plated a late insurance run in the fifth inning to take a 3-1 lead. In the sixth, Brewton had runners on first and second with one out and first and third with two outs, but failed to score. In the seventh, Drew Williamson picked up a two-out double, but was stranded at second as Monroe earned the two-run win.
Moye went the complete distance on the mound for Brewton and allowed three runs on three hits, walked none, struck out three and hit one.
At the plate for Brewton, along with Williamson’s double, Matt Hutchins led the way with two doubles and one RBI.
Stokes Jennings had a single along with Kristian Taylor. Connor Huskey had two singles in the loss.
Brewton made two errors in the game and left seven runners on base while Monroe made one error and left two on base.
In the first inning, Monroe’s two runs came on two hits—a double and a single— and one Brewton error along with a passed ball. The run in the fifth came on a fielder’s choice, a stolen base, a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly.
Taylor scored Brewton’s long run after he singled. Hutchins second double of the game scored Taylor.
Making the Brewton Babe Ruth 13-year-old all-star team for 2013 was: Connor Huskey, Hayden Atkinson, Weston Riddle, Hunter Revel, Russell Smith, Brandon Moye, Aaron Bosarge, Drew Williamson, Matt Hutchins, Kristian Taylor, Jason Konsler and Stokes Jennings.
