WSNMS football edges out BMS 8-6

Leading 8-6 in the fourth quarter with under a minute to go, the W.S. Neal Middle School football team held the Brewton Middle School Tigers out of the end zone from the 10-yard line to get a season opening win. The win for the Eagles starts their season with a 1-0 record while Brewton started 0-1.
W.S. Neal scored first in the game as quarter Jacobey Hawthorne scored on a 1-yard run with 4:06 left in the first quarter. After the two-point conversion, W.S. Neal led 8-0.
Neither team would score in the second or third quarters as W.S. Neal took their 8-point lead into the fourth.
In the fourth, Brewton finally was able to put points on the board when Demarios Luckey scored on a 24-yard run to cut the lead to 8-6 with 2:43 left in the game. After the two-point conversion failed, W.S. Neal held a 2-point lead.
Leading Brewton 8-6, W.S. Neal took the ensuing kickoff back to the 37-yard line.
On the kickoff, W.S. Neal’s Tyler Williams was injured on the play. After a lengthy delay, Williams would be taking off the field by stretcher and taken to the hospital, but x-rays would later come back negative.
After the delay, the Eagles of East Brewton took over on their own 37-yard line with 2:33 left in the game.
Looking to run the clock out, W.S. Neal fumbled and Brewton recovered with 2:26 left in the game and took over on the W.S. Neal 40-yard line.
Several plays later, Brewton was pushed back to the 44-yard line with 36.9 seconds left. From there, Tiger quarterback Drew Williamson connected with Stokes Jennings for a deep pass to put the Tigers on the 9-yard line with 28 seconds left in the game.
From there, the Eagles held the Tigers out of the end zone on four tries to get the win by two.
W.S. Neal finished with 78 total yards with 55 coming on the ground and 23 in the air. W.S. Neal had six first downs.
Hawthorne finished with one touchdown and had nine carries for minus-4 yards. Christian Wood had 17 yards on six carries. Darrius Williams had seven carries for 18 yards. Matt Hutchins added two carries for 15 yards.
Hawthorne was 1-for-4 passing with 23 yards to Hutchins.
Brewton finished with 187 total yards in the loss with 128 coming on the ground and 59 in the air. The Tigers had seven first downs.
Demarcus McMillan led Brewton rushing with 86 yards on 20 carries. Luckey had 26 yards on three carries and one touchdown.
Quarterback Drew Williamson was 3-for-7 passing with 59 yards while McMillan was 0-for-2. Jennings led with one catch for 35 yards.
In the seventh grade game, Brewton defeated W.S. Neal 8-0.
Brewton’s Cody Hall scored the lone touchdown of the game on a 5-yard run. Hall finished with six carries and had 38 yards.
Brewton racked up 68 total yards with 60 coming on the ground and had four first downs. W.S. Neal had no first downs and six yards in the loss—all coming on the ground.
W.S. Neal Middle School will be back in action Thursday, September 5 at Monroeville at 6 p.m.
Brewton Middle School will be back in action Thursday, September at home against Excel at 6 p.m.
