In the final home game of the 2013 season for the T.R. Miller Lady Tigers volleyball team and their seven seniors, the Lady Tigers swept Monroe County 3-0 to improve their record to 14-5 this season.
In the win, T.R. Miller defeated Monroe County 25-19, 25-5 and 25-14.
“It was a good win.” T.R. Miller Lady Tiger head coach Greg White said. “Monroeville is a pretty athletic team. Like I have said before, we had a net advantage tonight and I feel like we used it in all three games. We served the ball extremely well. In game two, I don’t know how many it was, but we had several in a row by one young lady. We served well tonight and hit the ball well and over time it took its toll. It was a good win for us and we played well.”
Senior volleyball players for T.R. Miller were Abbi Roberts, Jessica Allan, Moriah Brundidge, Amber Terry, Morgan Rowell, Karisa Nelson and Kara Bradley.
“This group of seniors have been playing with us for a long time,” White said. “Most of them have played six years with two playing for five years and one girl playing only two years after playing only for her junior and senior year. They are a close-nit group. They do everything together on and off the court. They are a good group of seven girls and we are going to miss them on the court, off the court, in the classroom and in the community. That is what we are proud of. They are good kids overall and we are going to miss them.”
While the game will hold a special memory for the seniors, it will hold an extra special memory for Allan. The senior missed playing her senior year due to an injury, but was able to play in her home finale as a server.
Allan racked up five service points in the win.
“It meant a lot,” Allan said of stepping on the court senior night. “I like the seniors that I will be graduating with this year and they have really supported me and everything that has happened to my foot and my injury this year. It has been rough not being able to play my senior year. But it turned out to be good in the end. It felt really good to get those service points. I was really proud of myself.”
White said he was also proud of Allan.
“That was big to get Jessica in there,” he said. “She had an ankle injury before the season started. We were not sure and we went all season not knowing if she was going to play. Two weeks ago we found she was definitely out, so we went to her and told her we were going to get her on the court some how. We had been working on her serving the last few days and we were able to play five on six tonight as we let her serve. That was big for her and I am proud of her. She has worked hard all these years. She was a regular setter for her, but I am proud of her. It was a big moment for her.”
The Lady Tigers were scheduled to end their regular season Tuesday in Andalusia.
TRM sweeps tri-match:
T.R. Miller’s Lady Tiger volleyball team swept a home tri-match Tuesday with the Excel Panthers and Jay Royals to push their winning streak to five straight wins.
The Lady Tigers defeated Jay 2-1 (25-21, 21-25 and 15-7) and Excel Jay 2-0 (25-12, 25-23) to improve to 13-5 this season. In the game between Jay and Excel, Jay won 2-0 (25-16 and 25-9).
“We did OK today,” T.R. Miller Lady Tiger head coach Greg White said. “We kind of grinded through the Jay game again like we did last week. We just came out on top this time. I thought we had a net presence today and I thought as the game went on, that was the deciding factor. Jay is a very scrappy team and the same way against Excel. We fought well against Excel and did not give many service points away and I thought that was a big thing. We hit the ball well at the net and kept pressure on their defense. It was good to get both of those wins.”
TRM 2, Jay 1
Against the Jay Royals, T.R. Miller took the first set but lost set two. The team ended up getting the win in the third set tiebreaker to claim the match.
In set one, Amelia Peach led with seven service points, one ace, and two kills.
In set two, Abbi Roberts led with five service points and two aces.
In the third set, Moriah Brundidge and Brittany Warren both led with three service points each.
TRM 2, Excel 0
Against Excel, T.R. Miller swept the Panthers 2-0 to get the tri-match sweep.
In set one, Peach led with seven service points, two aces and two kills.
In set two, Warren led with six service points and a kill.
The arera tournament for T.R. Miller will be played at Bayside Academy.
