Talking on the phone in her living room Tuesday evening, Barbara Curry heard a terrible crash right in her front yard.

“I heard it,” the Ridge Road resident said. “I said, ‘Somebody hit my car and the house.'”

A driver apparently lost control and collided with Curry’s parked car in her driveway, pushing it into the corner of her house and flipping into power lines next to the home, which is across the street from Peace and Goodwill Missionary Baptist Church.

The driver, who was not identified, was taken by ambulance to D.W. McMillan Hospital. Curry said rescue workers were able to get him out of the overturned vehicle through a window.

East Brewton Police and Ridge Road volunteer firefighters responded to the scene, among others.

It’s not clear what caused the accident, but Escambia County officials have been urging residents to use caution on Ridge Road while a paving project is ongoing there.

Parts of the road still have some loose gravel, which will soon be paved with regular asphalt.

County officials said Tuesday morning they expect the paving project to be completed by next week.
