First Baptist to host 5K Saturday

The CLAIM Student Ministry of First Baptist Church will be hosting the first Turkey Trot 5K road race this Saturday, Nov. 16, at 8 a.m.

“We are looking forward to this Saturday,” Randy Winton, director of student ministries at FBC said. “We know there are a lot of serious runners in our community and some not-so-serious, so we wanted to do something that would appeal to both. In the big picture, we are hoping that everyone who comes and brings canned goods realizes that while they get to have a great experience, they are also making a difference and helping others in the community. We have had a great response so far and expect to have a good crowd at the race. We also want to be sure and extend our appreciation to Wal-Mart for providing four turkeys for our race winners.”

The race will begin and end at the FBC parking lot with the course being run up Evergreen Avenue, through the Medical Center parking lot and back down Belleville Avenue.

The Turkey Trot will include a 1-Mile Fun Run for children under 12 and others who just want to enjoy a shorter course. There will be five age-group 5K winners for both males and females. The top two males and top two females (by time) will receive a trophy and a Thanksgiving Turkey, donated by Wal-Mart. All second and third place winners will receive a certificate.

Each child under 12 who participates in the 1-Mile Fun Run will receive a certificate of participation as well.

Race participants are encouraged to “dress up” as their favorite Thanksgiving character, but also to bring canned goods that will help replenish local food pantries as they help families within the community.

Entry fees for the 5K race are $20 per adult (12-over) and $50 for a family of four or more.

Entry fee for runners 12-under and all Fun Run participants is $10.

Please make checks payable to First Baptist Church. Proceeds from the race will benefit student scholarships to the Xtreme Winter Conference in Gatlinburg.

Flyers/registration forms can be picked up at the Brewton Area YMCA or at First Baptist Church.

There will be a final registration time from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m. the day of the race. The 5K will begin at 8 a.m., and the 1-Mile Fun Run will begin five minutes later.
