Cottage Hill cruises to win over TRM’s Lady Tigers Monday in area championship game; TRM to play at Straughn Thursday

In the class 3A area 1 girls basketball area championship game Monday night at Cottage Hill, T.R. Miller’s Lady Tigers lost to Cottage Hill 55-22. The loss dropped T.R. Miller’s overall record to 5-18.
Cottage Hill jumped on T.R. Miller early as they led 17-8 after one quarter of play. From there, the Lady Warriors built a 28-12 lead at the half after outscoring the Lady Tigers 11-4 in the second quarter.
In the third, Cottage Hill outscored T.R. Miller 16-6 to increase their lead to 44-18 heading into the final quarter of play.
In the fourth, Cottage Hill ended the game on an 11-4 run to get the win by 33 points.
Mekiah Williams led the Lady Tigers with 18 points while Star Drakeford and Karmaiya Jenkins both chipped in two points each.
Despite the loss in the area championship, as area runner-up, T.R. Miller still qualified for the sub-regional round of the state playoffs. T.R. Miller will travel to Straughn Thursday night for a 7 p.m. tip. Straughn defeated Southside-Selma Monday night for the class 3A area 2 championship.
Straughn is 25-1 and ranked No. 2 in the state. The two teams met last year in the sub-regional round of the state playoffs.
