TRM varsity baseball edges Straughn while JV falls

Two sets of Tigers tangled with each other as the Straughn Tigers took on the T.R. Miller Tigers Monday afternoon in Brewton and the two teams came away with a split.
Straughn’s JV team defeated the Tigers of T.R. Miller 9-6 while the varsity Tigers defeated Straughn 10-8.
T.R. Miller’s JV team fell to 0-3-1 with the loss while the varsity improved to 14-7.

Straughn JV 9, TRM 6
With the game tied at 6-all after a six-run rally by T.R. Miller in the fourth inning, Straughn plated three runs in the top of the fifth to down T.R. Miller 9-6.
Straughn led T.R. Miller 2-0 after one inning of play and 4-0 after three innings. After Straughn plated two runs in the fourth inning to take a 6-0 lead, T.R. Miller rallied in the bottom of the inning with six runs of their own to tie the game up at 6-all.
In the top of the seventh inning, Straughn plated three runs on three hits to take a 9-6 lead. In the bottom of the inning, T.R. Miller put runners on first and second but failed to score to fall by three.
Cory Matrullo earned the win on the mound for Straughn in relief of starter Matt Worley while M. Shultz earned the save.
Straughn’s trio of pitchers went five innings and allowed seven hits, six runs, walked four, hit one and struck out eight.
J. Hawkins had two singles and one RBI for Straughn while Matrullo and Brock Hammett each had a single and one RBI.
Campbell Hudson added two singles and two RBIs while Shultz and H. Nichols had a single each.
For T.R. Miller, Stokes Jennings took the loss on the mound in relief of starter Joshua Winton.
Winton went four innings and allowed five hits, six runs, walked two and struck out six. Jennings went one inning and allowed three hits, three runs, and walked one.
At the plate, Brooks Brown had one RBI while Jennings had a double and a single and one RBI.
Jake Najor added a single while Russell Smith had two singles and a double and two RBIs.
Winton added a single and one RBI while Jason Konsler had one RBI.

TRM varsity 10, Straughn 8
In a game that saw 11 different pitchers used in it—seven for Straughn and four for T.R. Miller—the Tigers of Brewton edged out Straughn 10-8.
T.R. Miller built a 6-0 lead through four innings with three runs coming in the first, one in the third and two in the fourth, but saw their big lead disappear late.
In the fifth inning, Straughn pounded out five hits and batted around in the inning to score seven runs and take a 7-6 lead over T.R. Miller.
Straughn increased their lead to 8-6 over T.R. Miller with one run in the sixth inning, but that would be the final run of the night for the visiting Tigers from Straughn.
T.R. Miller would go on and plated four unanswered runs in the bottom of the sixth to grab a 10-8 lead. T.R. Miller held Straughn off the bases in the top of the seventh to get the two-run win.
Tripp Floyd earned the win on the mound for T.R. Miller in relief. Floyd went the final two innings and allowed three hits, one run, walked none, hit none and struck out four.
Kyle Davis was the starting pitcher on the mound for T.R. Miller and went two innings and allowed no runs, no hits, walked one and struck out four.
Hunter Brittain went two innings and allowed two hits and struck out two. Tim McDonald went one inning and allowed five hits, seven runs, walked and struck out one.
At the plate for T.R. Miller, Jones Manning and Brittain had a single and one RBI while Floyd had one RBI.
Zac Griffin had two singles and one RBI while Ryann Gray had a single and two RBIs. Jo Jo Booker and Caden Lodge both had a single and one RBI for T.R. Miller.
For Straughn, Keith Edgar was the pitcher of record as he went 1/3 of an inning and allowed no hits, two runs, walked three and struck out one.
Brennan Head was the starting pitcher for Straughn and was joined on the mound by Taylor Messick, Beau Spivey, Bush (first name not known), Tucker Lawless, and Lane Simon.
All Straughn’s pitchers combined to go six innings and allowed seven hits, 10 runs, walked 10, struck out three and hit four.
At the plate, Simon had two singles, Edgar had a single and two RBIs, Lawless had two doubles and a single and three RBIs, Johnny Owens added a double and one RBI, Bush had a single and one RBI, and Gage Worley had two singles.
