The Flomaton Elementary School teacher was arrested in March after he allegedly stole a woman’s purse at Wind Creek Casino and Hotel parking lot is no longer employed with the Escambia County School System.
In a special meeting Tuesday, the board voted to accept the resignation of Clemente R. Brooks Sr., a fifth grade teacher at FES.
The board offered no public comment on the decision; however, Brewton Standard archives show that Brooks was arrested on March 18 by the Poarch Tribal Police Department on charges of third-degree robbery and first-degree theft of property.
Doyle “Butch” Lee, assistant chief with the Poarch Tribal Police Department, said last month that Brooks was in the casino’s parking lot when he approached two people — an elderly woman, and the woman’s younger daughter.
Lee said Brooks came up behind the two women and then ran away with the mother’s purse.
Although Brooks was not apprehended at the time of the theft, Lee said evidence — including video surveillance – made him the prime suspect. Brooks was arrested the next day.
Lee said the purse, which held about $400, was recovered.
Brooks’ resignation was effective as of April 21.
