Babe Ruth Thursday: South Carolina and LSU get wins to take opening series

The first week of the 2014 Brewton Babe Ruth season ended Thursday in Brewton with South Carolina and LSU winning the rubber games of their series to clinch the series.
South Carolina walloped Arkansas 18-2 Thursday to take the series and improve to 2-1 after one week while Arkansas fell to 1-2.
In the nightcap game, LSU defeated Arizona State 14-6 to take the series and move to 2-1 after one week while ASU fell to 1-2.
In Babe Ruth games this week, South Carolina meets Arizona State while LSU takes on Arkansas. Games will be played Monday and Friday in Brewton and Tuesday in East Brewton. Thursday games will be on Friday this week due to T.R. Miller’s sports banquet Thursday night.

South Carolina 18, Arkansas 2
South Carolina scored early and often and pounded out 18 hits in an 18-2 win over Arkansas Thursday night in Brewton in four innings.
South Carolina held Arkansas to one run each in the third and fourth innings while scoring four of their own in the first innings, two each in the second and third innings and 10 in the fourth to put the game away and seal the 16-run win.
Jacobey Hawthorne earned the win on the mound for South Carolina as he went four innings and allowed five hits, two runs, walked one and hit one while striking out five batters.
At the plate for South Carolina—who had 12 singles, four doubles, two triples and benefited from nine Arkansas errors—Hawthorne had two singles and one RBI while Joshua Winton had two singles and one RBI while Derrick Barton had two doubles and one RBI. Caleb Winton had two singles and a triple and one RBI while Troy Lewis had a triple and a single and two RBIs. Aaron Bosarge finished with a double and a single and two RBIs while Daniel Reed had two singles and one RBI. Christian Nelson had a single and one RBI for South Carolina in the win.
For Arkansas, Drew Williamson, Matt Hutchins and Garrett Salter all pitched with Williamson taking the loss. All three pitchers combined to go four innings and allowed 18 hits, 18 runs, walked one, struck out three and hit two batters.
At the plate, Drew Williamson had two singles and one RBI while Jo Jo Booker had a double and Hunter Revel had a single and one RBI. Salter had a double in the loss.

LSU 14, ASU 6
Leading 8-4 after six innings, LSU outscored Arizona State 6-2 in the seventh inning to grab a 14-6 win over the Sun Devils.
LSU pitchers Brandon Moye and Lane Clark held ASU to only six hits in the win. Moye earned the win for the Tigers.
The duo combined to go seven innings and allowed six hits, six runs, walked five, struck out 11 and hit two in the win.
At the plate, LSU pounded out 12 hits. Clark had three doubles and one RBI in the win while Stokes Jennings had three singles and three RBIs. Moye added a single and one RBI while O’Neil White had a single and a triple and two RBIs.
Tyler Baxter finished with a double while Hayden Winchester had two singles.
For Arizona State, Russell Smith and Jordan Williams pitched in the loss with Smith taking the loss. Smith and Williams combined to go seven innings and allowed 12 hits, 14 runs, walked five, struck out eight and hit none.
Tyler Pierce had two singles for Arizona State while Williams had one.
Smith had a single and two RBIs while Andrew Etheridge had a single and a double and two RBIs.
