Brewton BR Monday: South Carolina and Arizona State get wins

The South Carolina Gamecocks continued to pull away from the league Monday night in Brewton’s Babe Ruth League as they handed second place LSU a 7-1 defeat. The loss improved the Gamecocks to 5-1-1 this season while LSU fell to 4-3 overall.
In the other game Monday in Brewton, Arizona State used another late rally to stun the Arkansas Razorbacks with a 7-6 win. Arizona State moved to 2-4-1 overall this season while Arkansas suffered their third straight loss to fall to 2-5 overall.
South Carolina 7, LSU 1
In a battle of the league’s first and second place teams Monday in Brewton, South Carolina used a complete game one-hitter from Joshua Winton to defeat LSU 7-1. Winton had seven strikeouts in the win as he improved to 3-0 this season.
LSU’s Brandon Moye had the lone hit of the night for the Tigers as he had an RBI double in the first inning that scored Lane Clark who reached on a leadoff walk.
South Carolina scored twice in the bottom of the first inning to take the lead for good. Jacobey Hawthorne got hit by a pitch to lead off the innings, went to second on a Joshua Winton sacrifice bunt and scored on a double by Derrick Barton. Barton eventually scored on a passed ball.
USC scored three more runs in the second inning as Aaron Bosarge singled and scored on a Daniel Reed double. Tucker Davenport reached on fielder’s choice and both he and Reed scored on a Steven McCall single. USC added lone runs in third and fourth. LSU left eight runners in scoring position in the six-run loss.
For South Carolina, Barton and Reed doubled, Tucker Davenport had two singles, McCall had an RBI single and Bosarge, Preston Townson and Troy Lewis all singled.
For LSU, Moye started the game and gave up four hits and five runs with two strikeouts. Lane Clark pitched two innings of relief, striking out one and yielding four hits.
Arizona State 7, Arkansas 6
Down 6-4 to Arkansas heading into the bottom of the fifth inning, Arizona State rallied with three runs to come away with a 7-6 win over the Razorbacks.
Arkansas led Arizona State 3-1 after one inning, but Arizona State tied the game up at 3-all in the second inning.
In the third inning, Arkansas outscored Arizona State 3-1 to grab a 6-4 lead. After a scoreless fourth inning for both teams, the Sun Devils’ three runs in the bottom of the fifth propelled them to the one-run win. The rally win was the second straight game Arizona State rallied in. Friday night, Arizona State rallied from a 7-1 deficit to South Carolina in the final inning to garnish a 7-7 tie.
For Arizona State in the win, Micah Flores went 2-for-2 with one RBI while Jordan Williams was also 2-for-2 with two RBIs. Russell Smith added two hits in the win while Andrew Etheridge finished with one hit. Jason Konsler was 1-for-3 with one RBI.
Williams earned the win on the mound as he went five innings and allowed seven hits, six runs, five earned, walked four and struck out seven while hitting two batters.
For Arkansas, Jo Jo Booker went 1-for-2 while Matt Hutchins was 3-for-3 with one RBI. Hunter Revel added one RBI while Garrett Salter was 2-for-3 with four RBIs and a double. Bryce Melton went 1-for-1 in the loss.
Hutchins took the pitching loss on the mound as he went 4 1/3 innings and allowed eight hits, seven runs, three earned, walked three and struck out eight while hitting one batter.
Arkansas made five errors in the loss while Arizona State made two.
