Babe Ruth Thursday: SC edges out Arkansas 5-4, LSU doubles up ASU 4-2

As the fourth week of the 2014 Brewton Babe Ruth season ended Thursday night at T.R. Miller’s baseball field in Brewton, the LSU Tigers remained on top of the league standings followed by South Carolina, Arkansas and Arizona State.
LSU improved their winning streak to four straight wins as they claimed a 4-2 win over Arizona State. With the win, LSU moved to 8-4 overall this season while ASU fell to 2-9-1 with their fifth straight win.
South Carolina ended their three-game losing streak with a 5-4 win over Arkansas to move to 7-4-1 this season. The loss for Arkansas dropped them to 6-6 overall and ended their four-game winning streak.
With two weeks left in the season—six more games—teams will be back in action Monday at T.R. Miller at 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. Games will resume Tuesday and Thursday.
The next series in the league shows, as of Thursday’s games, No. 2 South Carolina taking on No. 4 Arizona State while No. 1 LSU meets No. 3 Arkansas.
South Carolina 5, Arkansas 4
After blowing a 4-0 lead in the top of the fifth inning, South Carolina scored the game-winning run on a wild pitch in the bottom of the inning to end Arkansas’ winning streak and their own losing streak with a 5-4 win.
South Carolina led Arkansas 2-0 after two innings and 4-0 after three innings before Arkansas scored all four of their runs in the top of the fifth inning. South Carolina’s run in the bottom of the inning gave them the one-run win.
Jacobey Hawthorne earned the pitching win on mound for South Carolina as he went all five innings and allowed two hits, four runs, one earned, walked seven, struck out four and hit two batters.
For the Gamecocks at the plate, Hawthorne had two singles, Joshua Winton had a single and one RBI, and Caleb Winton had a double. Troy Lewis added one RBI, Preston Townson had a single and one RBI, Daniel Reed had a single and Tucker Davenport added an RBI single in the second inning.
For Arkansas, Matt Hutchins and Weston Riddle had one hit each while Austin Rowell had one RBI.
Hutchins and Riddle pitched in the loss with Riddle being the pitcher of record. Hutchins went 3 1/3 innings and allowed six hits, four runs, three walks, struck out three and hit two batters.
Riddle went the final 2/3 innings and allowed one hit, one run, and walked one.
LSU 4, ASU 2
Brandon Moye and Stokes Jennings teamed up to pitch a one-hitter for LSU as they kept their winning streak rolling with a 4-2 win over the Arizona State Sun Devils.
Moye and Jennings teamed up to go seven innings and allowed one hit, two runs, one earned, walked one, hit one and struck out five. Moye got the win as he went the first four innings. Jennings got the save.
LSU led Arizona State 2-1 after the first inning. Neither team would score until the sixth inning when LSU plated two runs to grab a 4-1 lead. ASU’s final run came in the top of the seventh as the Tigers of LSU claimed the two-run win. ASU made eight errors in the loss.
For LSU at the plate, Connor Huskey had two singles and Moye had a double. Jennings added a two-RBI single in the first inning and Tyler Baxter had a single.
For ASU, Russell Smith had the lone hit while Hunter Brittain had a sacrifice fly RBI in the seventh inning.
Matt Thomas went the first four innings on the mound for the Sun Devils and took the loss as he allowed five hits, two runs, walked one and struck out two.
Smith went the final two innings and allowed two unearned runs, one walk and struck out four.
