Players from state championship squads dominate the Alabama Sports Writers Association All-State baseball team that was released today.
Of the six AHSAA classes, 14 players were chosen from state championship teams along with seven players from three AISA champions.
Class 4A Charles Henderson and Class 1A St. Luke’s led the way with four selections each while championship coaches Will Smith of Class 6A Spain Park, Tony Kirkland of Class 2A Houston Academy and AISA Clarke Prep’s Darrell Hobson were selected Coach of the Year.
The ASWA also selected Pitcher of the Year, Hitter of the Year and Player of the Year for each of the seven classifications.
Jesse McCord of Class 5A champion Spanish Fort was the class Player and Pitcher of the Year while Charles Henderson’s Chase Smartt was the Class 4A Hitter of the Year, Taylor Clemons of Madison Academy was the Class 3A Pitcher of the Year. Kirk Maddox of Class 2A champion Houston Academy was the Player and Pitcher of the Year, Class 1A St. Luke’s Brandon Cook was the Player and Hitter of the Year while teammate Leighton Lary was the Pitcher of the Year.
Other honorees included Sam Finnerty of Pelham as the Class 6A Player and Hitter of the Year while Thompson’s Jake Walters was the Pitcher of the Year. Owen Lovell of Class 5A Cullman is the Hitter of the Year, Cody Reed of Class 4A Ardmore is the Player and Pitcher of the Year, Matt Morgan of Class 3A Thorsby is the Hitter and Player of the Year and Blaine Beaird of Class 2A Westbrook Christian is the Hitter of the Year.
AISA’s Chandler Avant of Pike Liberal Arts is the Player and Hitter of the Year while Austin Menard of Tuscaloosa Academy is the Pitcher of the Year.
Class 4A Ardmore’s Reed, a left-handed pitcher who was selected by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the second round – No. 54 overall – of Thursday’s MLB draft, is the only repeat Player of the Year. AISA Pike Liberal’s Avant was also last year’s Hitter of the Year.
Mr. Baseball along with the Super All-State team will be announced at the yearly ASWA banquet, held Sunday at Troy University.
