Opp did what it had to do to come out on the winning end of things Monday night.
The Bobcats beat Brewton 20-18 in extra innings to claim the 8U Cal Ripken District 8 Tournament Championship at Johnson Park.
Opp’s journey to the title game had to go through the loser’s bracket, where the Bobcats won all three of their games to end up facing Brewton in the finals. Opp beat Brewton 12-2 Sunday night to force the winner-take-all game last night.
With the win Monday night, the Bobcats won five straight and with Brewton, will represent the district at the state tournament in Lincoln starting June 27.
Brewton tied the championship game at 18-all in the bottom of the sixth inning when Brodie Anthony hit an RBI double to score John Wesley Sessions.
The Tigers then tried to bunt, but Opp’s infield defense was too much as it completed a force out at first to send it into extras.
John Nolen Gohagan and Brady Whigham scored on a sac bunt and RBI single from Cade Jones, respectively, to take the two-run lead.
Like they did through the loser’s bracket, the Bobcats fought in the championship. Trailing 11-5, Xander Scoggins hit a two-run single and later scored to cut it to 11-9 in the third. In the fourth, Jake Coon hit his first of two inside-the-park home runs in the game to get the game at 13-12.
The Bobcats held Brewton to one run in the bottom of the fourth, and took the lead in the fifth at 15-14.
Coon hit his second inside-the-park bomb in the top of the sixth,
Brewton answered with four runs on Craig Blevins’ two-run double, Sessions’ RBI single and Anthony’s RBI double in the bottom of the sixth.
Brewton scored six runs in the first and five runs in the second innings.
Ballard and Coon had three runs each.
Sam Kelley and Blevins led Brewton with three runs each.
Brewton’s hitters included: Sam Kelley 3-for-4; Craig Blevins 3-for-4; John Wesley Sessions 3-for-4; Thomas Lowery 3-for-4; Brodie Anthony 3-for-4; Jim Daugherty 1-for-4; Gavyn Tieppo 2-for-4; Riley Thomas 2-for-4; Nathan Commander 1-for-4; Tyler Hoomes 2-for-3; Micah Trippe 1-for-3; and John Moore 2-for-3.
Brewton wins Thursday
In other 8U action, Andalusia fell to a good-hitting Brewton team, 21-3.
Thomas Lowery went 3-for-3; and John Wesley Sessions went 2-for-3 with two doubles; and Jim Daugherty and Craig Blevins had a home run each for Brewton.
Other Brewton players that had hits were: Sam Kelley 3-for-3; Jim Daugherty 3-for-3; Brodie Anthony 2-for-3; Gavyn Tieppo 1-for-3; Jax Filmore 3-for-3; Nathan Commandere 1-for-2; Tyler Hoomes 1-for-2; Micah Trippe 1-for-2; and Riley Thomas 2-for-3.
Andalusia’s Brunson Wilson and Clark Gay went 2-for-2 each to lead the Bulldogs.

Opp did what it had to do to come out on the winning end of things this weekend in the 8U Cal Ripken District Baseball Tournament at Johnson Park Sunday night.
The Bobcats put together a hitting clinic for all to see as they compiled 23 hits in a 12-2 victory over Brewton in the finals to force a winner-take-all game tomorrow for the championship.
In other action Saturday, Opp defeated East Brewton 11-2, and topped Evergreen 19-1 to inch its way closer to the title game.
Andalusia fell to East Brewton 12-6 in early action Saturday.
In the finals Sunday, Opp scored two runs in the first inning, four runs in the third and six runs in the fifth.
Jake Coon, Nick King and Al Hightower went 3-for-3 each; Colby Ballard, Cade Jones, Andrew Danford, Xander Scroggins, Trey Bradley and Griffen Pierce went 2-for-3 each to lead the Bobcats.
Brewton couldn’t get anything going on its bats as it only had 19 batters up in the game.
Opp had good defensive play on the infield and made one heck-of-a play from the outfield in the third inning with a 10-3 put out.
Brewton’s Brodie Anthony went 2-for-2 to lead the Tigers. John Wesley Sessions went 1-for-2.
In their first game of the tournament Thursday, Brewton took down Andalusia 21-3 and then defeated Evergreen 17-9. East Brewton lost their first game of the tournament Saturday 20-7 to Covington County.

In Brewton’s 17-9 win over Evergreen, Kelley was 3-for-4; Daughtery went 2-for-4; John Wesley Sessions was 1-for-4; Lowery was 2-for-4; Anthony was 2-for-4; Tieppo was 1-for-4; Blevins was 2-for-4; Filmore was 2-for-3; John Moore was 1-for-3; and Tyler Hoomes was 1-for-3.

Covington County 8
Brewton’s Craig Blevins hit a walk-off single to help his team complete the six-run fest over Covington County in the bottom of the sixth.
In the game-winning inning for Brewton, Anthony hit an RBI double to tie it at 8-8 and Daugherty slid under the tag to cut the lead to 8-6.
CC got off to a good start in the game by scoring one run each in the first and second innings for a 2-1 lead. With two runs in the third, one run in the fourth and two in the fifth, the local team was ahead 7-3. CC added one run in the top of the sixth inning.
Adams scored two runs, Clark scored two runs and Javen Poindexter scored two runs to lead CC.
Other Brewton hitters were Kelley 2-for-3; Daugherty 1-for-3; Sessions 2-for-3; Thomas 2-for-3; Anthony 1-for-3; Tieppo 1-for-3; Blevins 3-for-3; Filmore 1-for-2; Commander 1-for-2; Thomas 1-for-2; and Trippe 1-for-2.

Coon went 3-for-3 to lead the Bobcats. Jones went 1-for-3; Ballard, King, Scroggins and Bradley went 2-for-3 each; and Hightower and Boyd had two hits each to lead Opp.
East Brewton’s Easton Grace, Collin Nelson, Eli Stone, Ja’Sean Jones and Brodie Brown had two hits each.
Opp scored two runs in the first, six in the second, one in the third and two runs in the fifth.

EB scored four runs in the first, one run each in the second and fourth, two runs in the third and four runs in the fifth.
Andalusia scored two runs in the second, one run each in the third and fourth and two runs in the fifth.
Grace and Nelson scored three runs each to lead EB. Elis Kelley and Jon Jon McCants scored two runs each.
Clark Gay scored two runs to lead the Bulldogs.
Bryan Brooks, Sam Jackson, Hugh Stovall and Spencer Stroud scored one run each.
No other tournament game info, stats or scores were known as of press time Tuesday.
Brewton went 3-2 overall in the tournament while East Brewton went 1-2.
The wins for Brewton were their first ever in the 8U tournament after going 0-2 in the previous two trips to the district tournament.
