Five people – including one man with 35 bags of marijuana – have been arrested by the Brewton Police Department for drug possession.

Sgt. Andrew Casey said the arrests made over the last few weeks involved a variety of drugs including marijuana, prescription narcotics, synthetic marijuana and methamphetamine.

Arrested were:

• Eddie Lorenza Montgomery, 24, of Brewton, for possession of marijuana I. Montgomery was jailed July 10 following a traffic stop where he was found to be in possession of 35 bags of marijuana.

• Derrel Sanders, 35, of Lowell, Ind., for possession of a controlled substance, after he was arrested at the Brewton Walmart on June 13. Officers were called to check on Sanders’ welfare and allegedly found a leafy substance believed to be synthetic marijuana, or “spice,” in his car.

• Herbie Eugene Evans, 54, and Susie Rebecca Thompson, 41, both of Brewton, for possession of a controlled substance (Alprazolam) at the Walgreens Pharmacy. Casey said the two were found to be in possession of the pills, which are also known Xanax, when officers made contact with the regarding a complaint.

• Michael Dylan Pitts, 20, of Brewton, for outstanding warrants for two counts of possession of a controlled substance – one for meth and another for hydrocodone – as well as possession of marijuana II and possession of drug paraphernalia. Pitts was arrested following a traffic stop when officers found two bags of meth and a digital scale, which resulted in the two new charges. Officers also confiscated a loaded shotgun found next to the driver’s seat of Pitts’ vehicle, Casey said.
