Summer fun Monday

Looking for some free summer fun for your student? Then look no further than the “Summer Fun Mondays” at the Johnny Fischer Community Center.
There, students can participate in a variety of activities each Monday from 3 p.m. until 6:45 p.m. until Aug. 11, said Alline Manuel, president of the center’s board of directors. The program is open to students ages 5-12.
“We asked community leaders and members what we needed to provide to our community,” Manuel said. “They’re answer was something for the children. Kids don’t have anything to do during the summer. We do have a new playground, but we wanted to have more activities, so we came up with this idea. Here, we try to incorporate physical, education and health activities to make a well-rounded person.”
There is no charge for the program, which begins each with a speaker. This past Monday, the Brewton Fire Department gave a demonstration. Activities rotate on a 30-minute cycle and include arts and crafts, reading, storytelling, outside playtime, a snack, a healthy cooking class, math tutoring and then more outside activities.
“This is our first attempt at a project like this,” Manuel said. “We hope people take advantage of it.”
