W.S. Neal Middle School’s Nate Hutcheson rushed for 174 yards on 14 carries and scored two touchdowns to lead the Eagles of East Brewton to a 36-22 win over Brewton Middle School Thursday night in Brewton. With the win, W.S. Neal starts their season with a 1-0 record while Brewton starts 0-1.
After a scoreless first quarter for both teams, W.S. Neal led Brewton 8-6 after the first half.
In the third quarter, W.S. Neal took a 22-14 lead over Brewton after outscoring the Tigers 14-8 in the quarter.
In the fourth, W.S. Neal once again outscored Brewton 14-8 to get the win by 14.
Hutcheson got W.S. Neal on the board first as he scored on a 12-yard run with 7:50 left in the first half. Toby Jenkins had Brewton’s lone score of the first half as he scored on a 1-yard run with 2.5 seconds left before the half to cut W.S. Neal’s lead to 8-6.
In the third quarter, Matthew Thomas hooked up with Taylor Fountain for a 16-yard score to put W.S. Neal up 16-6 with 6:08 left in the quarter.
With 2:07 left in the quarter, Brewton’s Demonte Bailey scampered 26 yards to cut W.S. Neal’s lead to 22-14.
With 1:40 left in the third quarter, W.S. Neal would get a 49-yard run from Hutcheson to go up 28-14 heading into the fourth quarter.
The score would be the first of three straight for W.S. Neal as Hutcheson added a 50-yard score with 3:29 left in the game and Ty Williams added the final score of the night on a 2-yard run to put W.S. Neal up 36-14 with 46.6 seconds left in the game.
Bailey would score the final touchdown of the night as he went 61 yards with 34.3 left in the game to cut W.S. Neal’s lead to 36-22.
Along with Hutcheson’s play in the game, Thomas added two carries for 21 yards and Zach Baxter had four carries for 68 yards for W.S. Neal. Thomas finished 3-for-3 passing with 71 yards and one score. All passes were to Fountain.
For Brewton, Jenkins had 78 yards on nine carries and one score while Cody Hall had nine carries for 31 yards. Bailey finished with 118 yards on eight carries and scored twice.
Matt Smith was 2-for-3 passing for minus-4 yards.
W.S. Neal tallied 341 total yards of offense with 273 coming on the ground on 27 carries. W.S. Neal had 230 yards rushing in the second half.
Brewton finished with 234 total yards of offense with 238 coming on the ground.
Brewton had 10 first downs while W.S. Neal had 13.
In the seventh grade game, W.S. Neal won 8-0 over Brewton.
Kage Sims two carries for 13 yards for W.S. Neal while Aquarius Taylor had one carry for 51 yards and the lone score of the game.
W.S. Neal finished with 64 yards of total offense, all on the ground, and two first downs.
For Brewton, Logan Bush had five carries for 14 yards while Cam Knapp had five carries for 26 yards.
Overall, Brewton had 49 yards of total offense, all on the ground, and three first downs.
