TRM basketball plays in Red Level Christmas tourney

After playing in the Red Level Christmas tournament Friday and Saturday, T.R. Miller’s Lady Tigers were 0-2 while the boys were 1-1.
Both the Lady Tigers and varsity Tigers opened tournament play Friday against Georgiana and took losses.
The Lady Tigers lost 41-39 while the varsity Tigers lost 65-39.
In their games Saturday, the Lady Tigers took another close loss as Andalusia earned a four-point win by a score of 31-27.
In the varsity boy’s game, TRM defeated Brantley 42-35.
With the 0-2 start in the tournament, TRM’s Lady Tigers saw their overall record fall to 7-7 while the boys moved to 6-5.
The Tigers of T.R. Miller are one of eight teams in the tournament. The field for the girl’s tournament consists of Red Level, Opp, Greenville, Georgiana, T.R. Miller, Brantley, Andalusia and Samson.
The boy’s tournament consists Red Level, Opp, Georgiana, T.R. Miller, Brantley, Andalusia, Elba and Straughn.
Both teams finished up their tournament games Monday in Red Level.
The Lady Tigers were playing in the seventh/eighth place game while the varsity Tigers were playing in the fifth/sixth place game.
Results from Monday’s games were not known as of press time. Please see next week’s paper for complete game recaps.
All three TRM teams will be back in action Tues., Jan. 6, when they travel to Opp.
The game will be the first area game of the season.
TRM’s first home game of 2015 will be Fri., Jan. 9, when they host Hillcrest at 4:30 p.m.
The game with the Jaguars will also be an area game.
Georgiana 41,
TRM Lady Tigers 39

Down by as many as 12 points in the second half, TRM’s Lady Tigers rallied, but missed a last second lay up to take a 41-39 loss to Georgiana Friday night in Red Level.
The two teams matched up equally in the first half as the game was tied 9-9 after one quarter and 21-21 at the half after both teams scored 12 points each in the second quarter.
The third quarter proved to be the difference in the game as Georgiana outscored the Lady Tigers 14-6 to take a 35-27 lead into the fourth quarter.
In the fourth, TRM doubled up Georgiana 12-6, but took the loss by two points.
Mekiah Williams led the Lady Tigers with 20 points while Steely Ruzic added eight points. Kyla Bell finished with seven and Shae Nicholson chipped in four.
Georgiana 65,
TRM varsity 39

Georgiana cruised to a 65-39 win Friday over TRM’s varsity to send the Tigers into the loser’s bracket.
Georgiana jumped on the Tigers of TRM early as they led 16-4 after one quarter and 35-16 at the half following a 19-12 advantage in the second quarter.
In the second half, both teams scored 15 points each in the third quarter as Georgiana took a 50-31 lead into the fourth quarter.
In the fourth, Georgiana outscored TRM 15-8 to get the 26-point win.
TRM had seven players score in the loss with Chardian Johnson leading the way with 17 points. Trae Walker finished in double figures with 10.
Tamerick Jenkins and Carlos Thomas both had three points each while Brooks Brown, Ahmaud Taylor and Austin Holmes both chipped in two points each.
Andalusia 31,
TRM Lady Tigers 27

Leading Andalusia 22-20 heading into the fourth quarter, TRM’s Lady Tigers were outscored 11-5 in the fourth quarter to suffer a 31-27 loss and their second straight loss in the tournament.
Andalusia held TRM to five points in the first half as they led 6-2 after one quarter and 15-5 at the half following a 9-3 scoring advantage in the second quarter.
TRM caught fire in the third quarter as they poured in 17 points and held the Lady Bulldogs to five points to grab a 22-20 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
In the fourth, Andalusia ended the game on an 11-5 run to get the win.
Ruzic led the Lady Tigers with 13 points while Williams added seven.
Nicholson finished with three points and Bell had two. Emonea Curry and Akilah Brazile both had one point each in the loss.
TRM varsity 42,
Brantley 35

Chardian Johnson poured in 26 points to lead the Tigers to a 42-35 win over Brantley in the second game of the Red Level tournament on Saturday.
Along with Johnson’s 26 points, Kellyn Winn added six and Tamerick Jenkins had five.
Trae Walker and Brooks Brown both had two points each while Ahmaud Taylor had one.
Brantley led TRM 21-15 at the half. In the first quarter, both teams scored 11 points each, but Brantley outscored TRM 10-4 in the second quarter.
In the second half, TRM outscored Brantley 27-14 to get the win by seven points.
TRM held a 22-12 advantage in the third quarter to take a four-point lead into the fourth quarter. In the fourth, TRM held a 5-2 advantage.
