APD: Man impersonating cop, making illegal stops

Atmore police are warning residents to be on the lookout for a man impersonating a police officer making illegal traffic stops.

A department spokesperson said Friday officers received information of a white male possibly in his 20s operating a car not belonging to Atmore police or any other local law enforcement agency.

The spokesman said the blonde-haired man, wearing a blue uniform with a sewn-on badge and no duty belt, had already initiated one traffic stop using a white Ford Crown Victoria with a red light bar and blue interior lights. The car, which had no tag, sported a small circular sticker on the back window.

The vehicle was last seen Thursday driving on U.S. Hwy. 31 from the Canoe area into Atmore with lights activated, turning left onto Presley Street.

If a traffic stop is initiated and there are no identifying marks on the patrol car, residents are asked to call 911 or 251.368.9141 and inform the operator of one’s location. The operator will verify that the traffic stop is legitimate, and if not, a patrol unit will be sent.

Anyone with any information about the vehicle or its driver is asked to contact the Atmore Police Department at 251.368.9141 or one’s nearest law enforcement agency.
