Blueberry 5K planned for June 20

A Blueberry Fun Run/Walk 5K will take place Sat., June 20 in conjunction with Brewton’s 35th annual Blueberry Festival.
The event will take place at the Jefferson Davis Community College Park. Registration will begin at 8 a.m., and the race will begin at 9 a.m.
Those interested in running in the event can registers on site or at active.com.
Proceeds will benefit the Matthew Hutton Billy Memorial Scholarship.
Billy died from a courageous battle with leukemia in 2001. The scholarship was established in 2001 and has disbursed a total of $11,550.13 to date to a total of 29 recipients.
The scholarship will be awarded to eligible students who are dually enrolled in JDCC and the Huntingdon College bachelor of business management degree in Brewton.
An entry fee of $20 will be administered for those runners/walkers who are 14 and up. Runners/walkers 13 and younger will have an entry fee of $10.
Running/walking groups of a family of five will have a fee of $40.
The event is sponsored by the JDCC Foundation and the Chamber of Commerce.
Beth Billy is heading the event up.
“Participants may register before the event in person at the JDCC Business office or on-site on the day of the event,” she said. “On-site registration will begin at 8 a.m. at the gym on the JDCC campus in Brewton. Parking is available in front of the JDCC gym.
The event will conclude at Jennings Park, which is approximately 1.3 miles from the start site, she said.
“All participants must sign a waiver at registration. Minors must have a parent or guardian sign. Donations from non-participants are also welcome.
This competitive 5K is timed; trophies will be awarded in each age group.
The race will start at the JDCC park and after two miles will run in Brewton’s Jennings/Burnt Corn Creek Park.
The first 50 participants to register will receive at t-shirt.
JDCC Park is located at 220 Alco Drive in Brewton.
