The W.S. Neal baseball team will take part in the 2016 Hits for Heroes tournament at Northcutt Field in Dothan in February.

The event will start Sat., Feb. 13, with opening ceremonies. WSN will play Wed., Feb. 17, against Houston Academy at 4:30 p.m.

Founded by locals in Dothan, Hits for Heroes is a nonprofit organization with the focus of raising awareness and money for soldiers who are still deployed who need support, encouragement and supplies.

According to hitsforheroes.org, the event raised over $28,000 in 2014 to be used towards hundreds of care packages sent to troops. Hits for Heroes partners with the United Service Organizations in getting the care packages to troops.

WSN head baseball coach Coy Campbell found out about the event through another coach and thought it was a great idea.

“The objective is to bring recognition to wounded veterans in our area,” Campbell said. “We’re going to be playing against some of the best teams from Alabama and some from Florida. So it’s a big deal for our kids and the community. It gives us a chance for our kids to go on the road and show what our baseball program is all about.”

WSN athletic director Doug Hoehn said taking part in the tournament is a great opportunity to get involved for a special cause and to give the baseball program a chance to play on the road.

“It’s an awesome program for our veterans, their spouses and their children,” Hoehn said. “Coach Campbell came up with the idea to get involved and I thought it was just a great idea for our school to support our veterans.”

In January the organization will arrive on campus for a campus wide student assembly with guest speakers.
