TRM wins at JDCC math tourney

The 31st annual Jefferson Davis Mathematics Tournament was held on Thurs., Jan. 28, on the Brewton JDCC campus. Eight high schools and a total of 144 students participated in the daylong event. Teams competed for scholarships, trophies and awards on a 35-question exam and 16 “quick answer” cipher questions.
Michael Tedder, retired mathematics and physics instructor of JDCC and the founder of the tournament, was on hand to award the top 10 performing students medals and team trophies.
Mary Beth Lancaster, a scholarship committee representative, presented The Michael Tedder Math Tournament Scholarships to the top ten performing students to attend Jefferson Davis Community College.
T. R. Miller High School captured the first place trophy. Other schools receiving trophies were Jay High School, second place; Flomaton High School, third place; and, Escambia Academy, fourth place. Also participating were Atmore Christian School, Hillcrest High School, Escambia County High School and W.S. Neal High School.
Individual awards went to the following students:

• Dustin Reaves, FHS;
• Jarelle Hooks, FHS;
• Molly McConaughy, TRM;
• Jared Hendricks, Jay;
• Rebecca Boutwell, Jay;
• Alaina Smith, Jay;
• Shayn Bradley, TRM; and,
• Talon Overstreet, Escambia Academy.
Team sponsors included Lynda Cook, Hillcrest; Catherine Watson, TRM; Jeff Haney, WSN; Curt Bell, FHS; Carolina Smoak, Escambia Academy; Timothy Salter, ECHS; Jeff Stahly, Atmore Christian, and Johnny Wolfe and Amy Hatfield, Jay.
Jeannette Lymon, Allen Gainer and Loletta Redmon directed the tournament with assistance from the JDCC Honors students, SGA representatives, Phi Theta Kappa, and mathematics students.
