Do you love soccer? Are you interested in learning to play? Want to polish up your skills?

Look no further. The Brewton Area YMCA will host a soccer camp this summer from July 24 to July 28. The camp will be ran by the prestigious Challenger Sports’ British Soccer Camp instructors.

“Our experienced International staff study the game at all levels and will help players improve their core techniques and become more confidant on the ball,” said Regional Director Ross Lawrence.

“With programs for each age, the curriculum includes a variety of foot skills, technical drills, tactical practices, freestyle soccer, small-sided games and coached scrimmages.”

Sessions will be broken down to two age groups. Ages three to five will begin each day at 4 p.m., followed by a half-day camp for ages six to 16 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Cost for ages three to five is $80. Cost for the half-day camp for the older group is $130. There will be a $10 late fee for campers registering within 10 days of the camp start date.

Participants in the camp will receive a free soccer ball, T-shirt, poster and certificate. YMCA Sports Director Darly Curry said soccer has grown popular among the youth in the area.

“Our soccer numbers have been growing in our youth leagues,” said Curry. “We thought it was a need and thought we’d give it a shot. We spoke with Challenger Sport’s soccer camp about two months ago. They have a lot of expertise in the game and we think they’ll do a good job with the kids.”

Lawrence said if the camp brings in a lot of campers and interest is there, plans for one in the fall could be a possibility.

“We want kids to enjoy the game and get comfortable playing,” Lawrence said. “We want kids to enjoy the summer camp and possibly be open for a camp in the fall.”
