The area SPRAG (Single Parents Are a Gift) group put a new spin on the usual school supply drive. This year, the group is giving away supplies for teachers, said organizer Carolyn Bradley.
“We know that there are a lot of great organizations out there that give school supplies each year to the local school children; however, SPRAG was seeking to do something a little different, and we came up with the idea to donate school supplies to a local teacher in the tri-county area,” she said. “Some may say how did we come up with a way to decide what teacher would receive the supplies. It was easy – we used social media.”
Bradley sent a call to all teachers in the Conecuh, Monroe and Escambia counties for the first teacher to answer three simple questions – where were they teaching; what grade and the school principal’s name.
On Aug. 8, Brewton Middle School fifth grade teacher Mandy McKenzie was awarded a prize pack. She was the second winner, Bradley said.
“It’s safe to say that this is the way we’re going to go next year,” Bradley said. “Response was amazing, and a big ‘thank you’ goes out to all the SPRAG members and volunteers who donated school supplies.”
