Reports came in Sunday night to The Brewton Standard about foul smelling and tasting bread.

Some 150 people commented on a thread on the Brewton Standard’s Facebook page citing they had purchased foul smelling and tasting bread locally.

Greg Shipp, the local bread distributor for Flowers Bakers, who supplies the majority of America’s bread, said that there was an issue with Bunny, Wonder and Nature’s Own breads among the bread brands he delivers.

“We did get a shipment of bread that had a bad batch of yeast,” he said. “As soon as I was aware, I pulled all the bread last week. I can give my best guarantee.”

Shipp said he delivers new shipments of bread each day in Brewton, East Brewton and Castleberry and delivers about 15,000 loaves each week.

“My higher ups are telling me to tell people that it’s OK,” he said. “No one got sick. It was just a bad odor. The company completely did away with the supplier and get a whole new supplier.”

Shipp said he services all the local grocery stores, Dollar General, Family Dollar, Dollar Tree, Roses, Whataburger, Mark’s, Huddle House and more, locally.
