Firm looks at safety at local schools

Consultants from Severance Security Services LLC in Baldwin County toured Brewton City Schools.

The team joined by members of the Brewton Police Department and principals at each of the three schools did a walk-through of the perimeter and the inside of the school working to identify strengths, weaknesses and any improvements to procedures and more to help make each campus safer.

The group came at the request of Brewton Police Chief Monte McGougin who presented the plan to the Brewton City Board of Education in May.

“They will find problem areas,” he said. “They will put it in a format we can read and we will be able to see what kind of money needs to be spent and what kind of staff training is needed.”

Brewton City Schools Superintendent Kenneth Varner said that school officials trying to be more proactive in terms of school safety with school shootings being frequent across the country.

“We are certainly trying to be proactive in this regard. It is something that has become all too common in our society,” he said.  We are happy that our city has partner with us to help make our campuses safer.”

Varner said they are eager to see the assessment from the team.
