Residents of The Meadows Assisted Living are not sitting around twiddling their thumbs. The facility doesn’t offer only medical care. Those working there are constantly coming up with ways to make sure the residents have plenty of fun. Every week and each day is scheduled with activities, either games, visits from several church groups or exercise. Residents are asked to participate, but they are not required to do so. Through their affiliation with several hospices, various programs are available for the residents.

On a recent day, residents were asked to come into the dining area where a representative from Comfort Care Hospice waited to guide them through a painting lesson. Over the next hour, residents were given paint and a canvas to create their very own masterpieces.

Nursing homes and “old folks” homes have had a bad rap for many years, but things have changed.  Assisted living has added a fairly new player to the field to those taking care of the country’s elderly.

There are now several of these facilities in the area, and if you have a preconceived idea of what they offer the elderly, maybe you should take another look.

Gone are the days of parking the elderly in a facility, paying them a visit every now and then and thinking they have nothing to add to the community.

If that is your belief, nothing could be farther from the truth. The residents of The Meadows Assisted Living in Brewton are vital parts of the community. It offers not only a very nice place to live with dignity, but also has the atmosphere of home.
