Brewton City Schools Superintendent Dr. Kenneth Varner received the results of his evaluation at the regularly scheduled board meeting last Tuesday. Susan Salter from the Alabama Association of School Boards (AASB) facilitated the evaluation and presented the results to the Board and public.

The evaluation consisted of two parts.   The first part involved responses from the individual members of the board. Although a score of “3” would indicate that the superintendent met expectations, the average score given to Dr. Varner by the Board was 4.0: Exceeds Expectations. The board identified the areas of Technology Management, Facilities Management, and Financial Management as areas of strength, and no areas of Dr. Varner’s leadership were identified by the Board as needing improvement. The board was especially complementary of Dr. Varner’s leadership during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The second part of the evaluation involved responses from administrators and central office staff who report directly to Dr. Varner. The average response from this group was a 4.4 out of 5. Susan Salter said “These high scores indicate that the direct reports are very happy in their jobs and approve of Dr. Varner’s leadership of the district.”

Dr. Varner has consistently received strong evaluations as the superintendent of Brewton City Schools. Last year Dr. Dee Fowler from Akribose Group led a thorough, data-based evaluation which resulted in Dr. Varner receiving a rating of “Exceeds Expectations” from the board.

“It is always nice to get a good report” Dr. Varner said. “Everybody craves affirmation for the hard work they do, and I appreciate the board recognizing our many accomplishments. Although it is my evaluation, these positive results are really a testimony to the hard work of everyone in our district.”
