Alleged carjacker subject of incident near Atmore today

Escambia County Sheriff Heath Jackson released a statement today concerning the officer-involved shooting that occurred at the CreekTravel Plaza near Atmore on Jack Springs Road.
According to Jackson’s statement:
“On January 8, 2021, Officers with the Poarch Creek Tribal Police made contact with a carjacking suspect at the CreekTravel Plaza located at 4740 Jack Springs Road in Atmore, Alabama. The suspect is alleged to have committed numerous car thefts and armed car jacking’s that spanned over multiple counties in Alabama. After being approached by uniformed officers and marked patrol vehicles, an altercation ensued forcing officers to discharge their firearms. The suspect was injured and transported by EMS to the hospital for treatment. All officers involved managed to avoid injury and we are thankful for their professional and quick response to such a dangerous situation.
“The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) was requested to conduct the investigation as is standard practice with officer involved shootings that take place in Escambia County, Alabama. The Escambia County Sheriff’s Office will refer any other questions to ALEA for comment.”
No other details have been released by any of the agencies involved in the investigation.
