As many as 50 students from across the county will participating in the annual Escambia County Calf Show and Sale this weekend near Atmore.

Set for Saturday, Perdido River Farms will once again be hosting the event.

Anthony Wiggins, Extension Coordinator, said the event has been steady with the number of participants over the past few years.

“This is about where we have been with the number of participants over the last two years,” Wiggins said. “Right now, we are the biggest county show in the state.”

Wiggins said registration for students will begin at 7 a.m. Saturday morning.

“It’s an all day thing for these students,” Wiggins said. “We start early with registration and weigh-ins for the calves.”

Wiggins said the show will begin at noon with buyer registration beginning at 5 p.m. The sale portion of the event will begin at 6 p.m.

“We are not really open to the public this year because of COVID,” Wiggins said. “But, we are still encouraging buyers to come and support the work of these students.”

Wiggins said the show and sale would be live-streamed on the Escambia County 4-H Facebook page.

“We still wanted to do the show and sale,” Wiggins said. “Since the public can’t be with us as usual, we will be streaming live for those who enjoy the event.”

Wiggins also said that the usual programs held through the Extension office have not been “normal” this year.

“This has been a different year for us,” Wiggins said. “We haven’t been able to do all of the educational programs that we normally do. We’re just glad to be able to move forward with this show and sale.”
