On Wednesday, Congressman Jerry Carl (R-Mobile) released a statement concerning his vote on HR1 – For the People Act.

“I voted against the Democrats’ For the People Act For the Politicians Act because it would radically transform our elections by taking election decisions away from the people and giving more power to bureaucrats. This act utilizes taxpayer money to fund campaigns, legalizes ballot harvesting, weaponizes the IRS for partisan gain, and mandates felons be allowed to vote. Instead of imposing California-style elections on the rest of the nation, Congress should be working to restore Americans’ faith in our elections. I’m proud to be a cosponsor of the Save Democracy Act, which promotes free and fair elections, respects the primary authority of states over election administration, and does not allow taxpayer money to be used for federal campaigns.”

Although Carl voted against the measure, the For the People Act passed in the House.

The For the People Act, also known as HR1,  would provide sweeping reforms to protect voters’ rights, increase election security, mandate independent redistricting and more.

The For the People Act, also known as H.R. 1, was first introduced and passed in 2019 during the last Congress and reintroduced by Rep. John Sabranes, D-Md.

The bill passed 220-210, all Republicans voted to oppose the bill with a lone Democrat joining them in their vote against the bill. Two Republicans did not vote on the act.
