Cheryl Barton, vice president of the Pensacola Caring Hearts organization, is working with her non-profit organization to provide food items for people in need in the Brewton area.
Part of that effort has resulted in the establishment of a food pantry at the John L. Fisher Community Center.
“Due to the pandemic, we saw a need for continued assistance,” Barton said. “People have lost their jobs and that need for food assistance will continue.”
The group has sponsored food giveaways with truckloads of food sporadically throughout the pandemic.
Those giveaways have helped countless Brewton area residents, but the group saw a bigger need — and they’ve stepped up to fill in the gaps.
On Saturday, May 1, the organization will hold a grand opening for a permanent food pantry.
“We haven’t made a final decision on what days we will have the pantry open,” Barton said. “We want to choose a day that will be most beneficial to the community.”
In addition to the pantry opening, the group will host another food truck distribution on Thursday, April 29 beginning at 9 a.m. at the Fisher Center.
