When a disaster strikes, making sure you have diapers and formula for the baby may be a little down the list, but for one group, those items zoom straight to the top when it comes to helping others.
Debbie Gomillion and Daissy Serna with Catholic Social Services in Robertsdale, made their way to Brewton and East Brewton this week to offer some assistance to mothers and children in the area.
“This area is part of our territory,” Gomillion said. “When we heard what happened, we began our plan to help moms and families here.”
The duo brought a supply of needs for babies for those who may be in need following the disaster last week.
“We brought diapers, wipes and formula,” Serna said. “We dropped off those items at the Brewton Police Department to make them available for moms and babies here. Others in our group brought a load of cleaning supplies and food last week. We are just doing what we can to help where possible.”
Catholic Social Services provides services for Escambia County mothers and children up to 3-years old to include counseling, classes and other programs.
“When they participate in our programs, they earn points,” Serna said. “With those points, they can purchase things like car seats, cribs or other safe sleeping devices. We are hoping to reach out to more mothers in Escambia County to help where we can.”
