On the front page of the Wednesday, December 8 edition of The Brewton Standard newspaper, you’ll see a story about a contribution made to help complete the Babe Ruth fields at the Brewton Area YMCA.

That donation was made by the City of Brewton after a challenge was issued by the Greater Brewton Foundation to match a requested donation for the park.

It is a testament to the people of our community that these donations were possible.

The Greater Brewton Foundation came into existence in 1994 by a group of people hoping to make our community a better place in which to work, raise a family and enjoy life in general.

If you take a look at their mission statement, it reads as follows:

“The foundation seeks to raise and provide funds for the promotion of the health, welfare, culture, education, recreation, neighborhood improvement, and social needs of the area which includes the city of Brewton, AL and the surrounding areas in Escambia County, AL. The foundation provides means for donors to meet the civic needs of the Greater Brewton, AL area.”

Recipients of funding for 2021 include:

Appleton Volunteer Fire Department; McCall Volunteer Fire Department; AmericanRed Cross; Escambia County Child Advocacy; Communities of Transformation; Escambia County Habitat for Humanity; John L. Fisher Community Center; Paws Crossed Rescue; Phi Delta Kappa; Brewton Area YMCA; Ozanam Charitable Pharmacy; T.R.Miller High School; W. S. Neal High School; W.S. Neal Middle School; Rottschafer Day Care Inc.; Turtle Point Science Center; Brewton’s Tree & Beautification Board; Christmas Project; Brewton Public Library; Drexell & Honeybee’s; Community Action Agency; Community Enabled; and Caring Hearts.

For the Foundation to be able to present funding checks to this many organizations and still be able to make an additional contribution to the YMCA, the contributions from the community residents and businesses is staggering.

It’s been said that we live in the best community in the world. I tend to agree with that statement.
