If fun, food, entertainment and plenty of games sounds like a good day, area residents are in luck.
Jennings Park will be abuzz with activity Saturday, July 16 for the annual Friends and Family Day event.
Connie Baggett, director of progam management for the City of Brewton, says the event is gearing up to provide a fun atmosphere for people of all ages.
“This event is traditional fun and games for every age group from water slides to a coin search for kids,” Baggett said. “Prizes and contests happen all day with Brewton Bombers running a Cornhole tournament and Brewton Fire Department cooking up burger and hotdogs for lunch.”
Among events planned for the day will be a cornhole tournament that begins at 10 a.m. with registration beginning at 9 .m. The top team will have a chance at $600.
Water slides will be running and a beaded bracelet station will be open at 10 a.m. and a kids coin search will be held at 10:30 a.m. The watermelon eating contest will begin at 11 a.m. with cash prizes for winners in each age division. Bingo games will be played beginning at noon with big cash prizes for regular games and a $250 black-out prize. A basketball contest begins at 1 p.m. with cash prizes in each of three age divisions.
The day-long event will end with a bang provided by local talent with a show beginning at 4 p.m. To pre-register, contact Claudia Lee at 363-9086 or Evelyn Daniel at 238-9369. The show will be limited to the first 20 contestants to register. First prize will receive $500 with second prize at $400 and $300 for third place.
“The event ends with a talent show that was phenomenal last year,” Baggett said. “We want everyone to bring a lawn chair and play bingo, have some watermelon in the contest or just watch people enjoy the day.”
The event is being organized by a newly-developed committee in charge of planning events for the community.
“The city decided to sponsor a committee last year to be sure we have events that appeal to all demographics in Brewton,” Baggett said. “One event the Entertainment and Events Committee created was Friends and Family Day.”
The event is being made possible by a group of sponsors including McMillan Foundation, Brewton Insurance, Weaver’s, Thompson Garrett and Hines, Williams Memorial, Main Event, JusDo, Otts Moore and Thad Moore
“We appreciate the generous sponsors who make these events possible,” Baggett said. “There will be cash prizes awarded during the day. We hope to see everyone out at the park for this annual event.”
