With spring and summer just around the corner, Brewton area residents will have new opportunities for entertainment and exercise.
Thanks members of the Brewton City Council, two new outdoor areas will be made available — one at E.O. Wilson Adventure Park and one at Dogwood Hills.
City Clerk Brooke Hartin explained the planned construction of a tree house at E.O. Wilson Park.
“We have received a grant for a portion of the costs from Georgia-Pacific,” Hartin told the council. “The total cost estimate is $23,250 with $12,000 of that cost covered by the Geogia-Pacific grant. We are looking forward to having this showpiece in our park.”
Hartin said the construction cost for the tree house would include in the installation of stairs and handrails as opposed to the typical ladder-style entry seen in common tree house structures.
A construction agreement between the City of Brewton and J. Kemp Construction was not given a planned completion date.
Another planned outdoor offering will be a pickle ball court on the campus of Dogwood Hills on Douglas Avenue.
Hartin told the council that total estimated costs for the new court is at $62,868.
“That quote will include demo of the old court, installation of the new court and will include fencing and lighting,” Hartin said. “The construction can’t begin until the weather warms so we are looking at beginning the project in April or May.”
The council approved the agreement for the work with American Tennis Courts.
In other business Monday, the council:
• presented a resolution in honor of Janie B. Avant’s 102nd birthday. Bobbie Matthews and Krystal Matthews, daughter and granddaughter of the honoree respectively, were on hand to accept the framed resolution for Avant. Mayor Yank Lovelace read the resolution prior to the presentation noting that Avant was born in the Brooklyn community but had been a long-time resident of the west end area of Brewton. The honoree has five children and eight grandchildren and is a member of the Baptist Hill Missionary Baptist Church.
• approved a declaration of surplus property. Hartin explained the property is a portable kitchen previously used by the Brewton Fire Department with the primary use of cooking for public events. Hartin said the department personnel no longer use the kitchen but use a large grill for cooking at public events and the city should sell the item before it falls into a state of disrepair;
• Mayor Lovelace appoint Council members Feast Broughton, David Jennings and Carrie Brown to the nominating committe for the Public Libarary Board noting that board member Gwendolyn Walton’s term will expire in March;
• Mayor Lovelace appointed councilmembers Joe Watson and Cheryl Barton to the nominating committe for the Recreation Board.
The Brewton City Council meets each first and third Monday of the month with meetings beginning at 4:30 p.m. The meetings are open to the public and are held in the council chambers at Brewton City Hall.
