The question of what’s for lunch this Sunday is being answered with a special meal planned as a celebration for Drexell & Honeybee’s Donation’s Only Restaurant.
The pay-what-you-can restaurant is owned and operated by Lisa and Freddie McMillan and is celebrating five years in their downtown Brewton location.
An out-of-the-ordinary Sunday opening will be to celebrate the anniversary with special guest chef, Star Maye. A celebration meal will be served from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sunday, March 26.
“Five years ago this month, we opened the doors to Drexell & Honeybees,” the McMilans said in a newsletter. “With God’s help and your support, we have been able to keep the dream alive.”
Lisa said the opening of the restaurant was done completely on faith, but the donations and support have kept the doors open.
“When we opened on March 26, 1018, we weren’t sure that we were going to be able to make it,” Lisa said “We didn’t have any support or the finances to keep open. We had just used everything we had to open. But, by faith, we did it. And you know what? Someone showed up and left us a donation that allowed us to stay open for a few more weeks. It has happened over and over again, but because of your support we have ben able to stay open.”
Lisa says that the restaurant is more than just a place to get a meal.
“Because of the support, fewer people have gone hungry and many more have found a place of community and refuge,” Lisa said. “We feed the need to restore dignity and build community.”
The menu will also be a little more elaborate on that day with Asian flank steak, honey whiskey chicken, garlic mashed potatoes, rice, vegetable stir fry, shrimp and grits, ribeye roast, corn pudding, desserts and more.
Although the cook and the menu may be a little unusual, the McMillans are inviting the public to join in the celebration free of charge.
The restaurant is located in historic downtown Brewton at 209 Lee Street. Parking is available across the street.
