Brewton will be crowded with visitors in just a few weeks as the annual Alabama Blueberry Festival is set to get underway.
Set for Saturday, June 17, the festival will begin at 8 a.m. and will feature a variety of entertainment, arts and crafts vendors and plenty of food and drink for those on hand for the event.
Chamber Executive Director Judy Crane said the field of participants in arts and crafts is near capacity already.
“We are still taking applications for vendor space,” Crane said. “But, we will need to stop taking those by the end of this week (Friday, May 26). We are almost to capacity and have a very limited number of spaces available.”
Crane also said that the end of the week will will also be the deadline for preorders on blueberry ice cream and the annual festival tshirt.
“We only have this ice cream available once a year,” Crane said. “We want to make sure that everyone who hopes to get a tub has that opportunity.”
Locally produced blueberries are provided to the makers at Cami’s Old Dutch Creamer in Mobile to be used in the ice cream.
“We pick up the blueberries from local growers and take them to the creamery to be used in the ice cream,” Crane said. “We will be distributed the ice cream on the Thursday before the Festival and have some single-serve cups available on the day of the Festival.”
To place your preorder for the ice cream or the tshirts, contact the Chamber at 251-867-3224. After Friday’s deadline for preorders, ice cream and tshirts will only be available on Festival day.
Crane also said the annual tradition of blueberry cobbler and blueberry crunch will continue again this year.
“We will take all of the ingredients for those dishes to the ladies at W.S. Neal Elementary School,” Crane said. “they have done a great job preparing those dishes for us for several years and we are happy they have agreed to do that for us again this year. We supply local blueberries for those dishes as well.”
Crane also said that entertainers are still being booked for the event.
“We like to have as many local entertainers as we can for the day,” Crane said. “We don’t pay for entertainment, but it gives local performers a chance to showcase their talent to a big crowd.”
For those hoping to take the stage for the Festival, contact the Chamber for details and performance times still available.
