A celebration is planned next week in observance of Juneteenth.
Joe Watson is one of the coordinators for the event and said the day will be filled with fun and plenty of chances to enjoy some good food.
Set on June 19 — Junteenth — the festivities will begin at 4 p.m. and will continue until 8 p.m. at the John L. Fisher Center on Liles Boulevard.
Watson said there will be waterslides and face painting for the kids and the whole family can enjoy a concert featuring Eklektic during the event. The group, labeled a cover band, will perform music from a variety of genres with something for everyone to tap their toes or dance to during the evening.
A car and motorcycle show will also be going on at the location featuring a wide variety of vehicles for viewing.
In addition to the entertainment, there will also be a barbecue cook-off featuring professional and amateur cooks.
Attendees will be able to purchase a $10 tasting ticket that will allow them to sample the entries and cast their vote for a winner in the two categories. The foods set for the cook-off will include ribs, chicken and pulled pork.
After tasting is complete and votes cast, a winners will be chosen for the $500 in prizes up for grabs.
“We have some vendors who will also be there for the afternoon,” Watson said. “We encourage everyone to bring a blanket or lawn chair to relax and enjoy the event.”
