Neighbors helping neighbors was never more evident as local pharmacy workers stepped up to help one of their own.
Deanna Rutherford, an employee at Brewton’s Medical Center Pharmacy, was recently diagnosed with a form of leukemia and her co-workers began a project to help cover her expenses during treatment and recovery.
“We wanted to help in any way that we could and selling shirts came to mind,” said Whitney Blackman, a co-worker of Rutherford’s.
In just a short time, the pharmacy workers were able to make sales that allowed for a sizeable donation to the patient.
“We were able to sell enough shirts to give her an envelope with a little over $2,500 to help,” Blackman said. “We also took some donations and gave an additional $200 or so to help.”
Shirts were made available to anyone interested in helping through sales at Medical Center Pharmacy, Cottrell’s Hometown Pharmacy and Flomaton Medical Center Pharmacy.
Danny Cottrell, owner of the pharmacies participating in the fundraiser, said Rutherford was a valuable part of the team.
“She was an employee at Flomaton before coming to Medical Center Pharmacy in about 2013,” Cottrell said. “She does a real good job for us and knows everybody in Flomaton and Jay. We are tickled that se seems to be doing better and can’t wait to get her back at the pharmacy.”
Blackman said shirts are still available for order and the group has added a bracelet to the fundraiser.
