Two local cheerleaders represented their school, their community and cheer organization during special ceremonies held in Hawaii last week in honor of Pearl Harbor Day.
Ashlyn Hammac and Gabbie Selario as part of Varsity Spirit, global leaders in cheerleading, were in Honolulu on Dec. 7 for the annual Pearl Harbor Memorial Parade.
The pair marched in the parade with thousands of fans lining the strees of Waikiki Beach.
This year marks the 82nd Anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor. The parade theme is “Remembering the past and celebrating our future.”
“We honor our veterans and their families while recognizing that once bitter enemies can become loyal friends and allies,” officials said.
Cheerleaders who are invited to perform are part of a select group of All-Americans identified at Varsity Spirit summer camps across the country.
All-Americans are based on superior cheerleading as well as leadership skills operated by UCA. Only the top 12 percent of the cheerleaders earn the chance to participate in a performance of this caliber.
Besides being able to perform for the true national heroes, athletes had the opportunity to meet cheerleaders from across thae nation. During the week of Dec. 3-10, they also enjoyed a traditional Hawaiian luau, a memorable trip to the Pearl Harbor Memorial and the USS Missouri Battleship, a hike up Diamond Head, the beautiful beaches, and an all day educational tour across the Island.
